Jurassic Park

Originally released 20 years ago, Steven Spielberg‘s dinosaur movie (adapted from the novel by Michael Crichton) gets a new run in theaters sporting retrofitted 3D effects. Despite CGI effects two decades old, the film holds up remarkably well and the 3D works (most of the time) to enhance what is still a thoroughly enjoyable popcorn movie.

The film, for those need a refresher, stars Sam NeillLaura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum as scientists recruited by a wealthy billionaire (Richard Attenborough) to sign off on his new amusement park which features cloned dinosaurs. Also along for the weekend are the billionaire’s grandchildren (Joseph Mazzello, Ariana Richards) and his “blood-sucking lawyer” (Martin Ferrero).

Doctor Who - The Bells of Saint John

After two episodes teasing us with other versions of the character, Doctor Who returns for the second-half of Series Seven to unite The Doctor (Matt Smith) with the current version of Clara Oswald (Jenna-Louise Coleman). I like the casting of Coleman as the new companion, but I have to say I’m a little disappointed that the previous versions of Clara, at least at first glance, seem vastly more interesting than the one that that’s going to be hopping around time and space with The Doctor for the foreseeable future.

Doctor Who - Dalek

In honor of the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who we continue to look back at some old episodes of the series. When Doctor Who returned in 2005 it was in the wake of the last Time War between the Time Lords and the Daleks. The Doctor (Christopher Eccleston)  arrived on Earth believing he was the sole survivor but when a mysterious signal reaches out pulling the TARDIS off course and 52 levels down into a Utah millionaire’s bunker, he discovers the last thing he expected: a captured Dalek alone in the universe.

Star Wars #3

Star Wars #3Tensions start to fray in Star Wars #3 as Princess Leia becomes increasingly frustrated with Luke‘s inability to follow orders and his flirtateous relationship with Prithi, another member of Leia’s secret squadron. Things aren’t going much better for Han and Chewie whose rendezvous with a contact on Coruscant ends with Solo shooting the traitor in the back and a shoot out with Imperial agents.

Unable to get Luke to follow orders, and stung by his words and reminder what he’s accomplished for the Rebellion so far, Leia benches her best pilot, but, as Mon Mothma suggests, she most consider whether her jealousy over Luke’s relationship with Prithi is clouding her judgement.

Darth Vader arrives at his new assignment, overseeing the Empire’s new secret battle station high above the forest moon of Endor: the second Death Star whose construction appears to have been well under way before the Rebellion’s destruction of the original Death Star. Worth a look.
