Doctor Who - Cold War

After a bit of a miscalculation The Doctor (Matt Smith) and Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman) materialize on a sinking Russian nuclear submarine near the North Pole in 1983 which has just picked up a rather unusual passenger in the form of a Martian Ice Warrior whose mere presence on the sub puts the entire crew, and perhaps even the entire world, in danger. While the ships first officer (Tobias Menzies) dismisses The Doctor’s explanation of events as pure rubbish, the ship’s Captain (Liam Cunningham) and scientist (David Warner) try to keep an open mind.

“There’s something on your back.”

Doctor Who - Turn Left

In honor of the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who we continue to look back at some old episodes of the series. “Turn Left” reminds us that our lives are defined by the choices we make, both large and small. Sometimes it’s the small, seemingly insignificant, choices that can have the largest impact. While traveling with The Doctor (David Tennant) to the planet Shan Shen, Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) has her fortune read by a mysterious woman (Chipo Chung) who is far less interested in telling Donna’s future than changing her past to prevent Donna from ever meeting The Doctor.

Doctor Who - The Mark of the RaniIn honor of the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who we continue to look back at some old episodes of the series. Although Colin Baker‘s run as the Sixth Doctor was short, and not without its share of controversy, there are a few Doctor Who gems during his three-year stint on the show. One of the best, “The Mark of The Rani” pits The Doctor as his companion Peri (Nicola Bryant) up against not one but two evil Time Lords when The Doctor begins investigating a time distortion and a series of deaths (each bearing an unusual red mark) during the Luddite rebellion in the 19th Century.

Although she only appeared in two episodes of the series, the Rani (Kate O’Mara) is a fan favorite. Just as devious as the Master (Anthony Ainley), the Time Lord arrives in the coal town of Killingsworth to steal neurochemicals from the miners in order to continue her immoral experiments which have left the entire population of the planet Miasimia Goria without the ability to sleep. The Master and the Rani come to an uneasy alliance based on lies, deception, and blackmail, targeting The Doctor.

Jurassic Park

Originally released 20 years ago, Steven Spielberg‘s dinosaur movie (adapted from the novel by Michael Crichton) gets a new run in theaters sporting retrofitted 3D effects. Despite CGI effects two decades old, the film holds up remarkably well and the 3D works (most of the time) to enhance what is still a thoroughly enjoyable popcorn movie.

The film, for those need a refresher, stars Sam NeillLaura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum as scientists recruited by a wealthy billionaire (Richard Attenborough) to sign off on his new amusement park which features cloned dinosaurs. Also along for the weekend are the billionaire’s grandchildren (Joseph Mazzello, Ariana Richards) and his “blood-sucking lawyer” (Martin Ferrero).
