doctor-who-series-7-part-one-blu-rayThe first half of Doctor Who Series Seven is collected here including The Doctor‘s (Matt Smith) final farewell to Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill), dinosaurs on spaceships, a cyborg assassin in the Old West, an invasion of mysterious black cubes, the introduction of Mark Williams as Rory’s father, and an entire planet of insane Daleks which teases the future introduction of Jenna-Louise Coleman as The Doctor’s new companion in this year’s Christmas episode.

Centered around single one-off episodes rather than an ongoing story arc, these episodes get the season off to a good start (even if the western episode is a little flat), before returning the Weeping Angels to their original glory and saying a tearful farewell to the Ponds. “Dinosaurs on a Spaceship” is the real stand-out among the set which feels very much like a throwback to Doctor Who‘s old Douglas Adams days complete with an absurd premise and pair of quarreling robots.

News and Notes – Star Wars: Episode VII scheduled for 2015

Star WarsThe past hour the Internet has been all abuzz with news that George Lucas has sold Lucasfilm, Industrial Light & Magic, Skywalker Sound, and the rights to the expanded Star Wars universe to Disney for $4.05 billion (half in cash and half in 40 million shares of Disney). Kathleen Kennedy, current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will take over as President of the company and serve as executive producer for Star Wars: Episode VII which is tentatively scheduled for a 2015 release date.

Cloud Atlas is in Need of a Road Map (and Lots of Editing)

cloud-atlas-posterCloud Atlas, the collaboration by the Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer to bring the novel of the same name by David Mitchell to the big screen is, to put it bluntly, a mess.  It’s an ambitious mess to be sure as the project bites off far more than it can chew by casting a small group of actors playing multiple roles across different time periods, but it’s a mess none the less. Fans of the book may be prepared for what’s to come, but the rest of us could use a road map of this late night ride to nowhere. (At least nowhere interesting.)

The film beings by throwing the audience into a variety of stories taking place decades, or in some cases centuries, apart (including two distinctly different version of the future – one of which owes a little too much to The Time Machine). Introducing a slew of characters in the opening 15-20 minutes, all played by the same group of actors who jump centuries, ethnicities, and even gender between tales (due to some strikingly inconsistent make-up and CGI), Cloud Atlas hits the ground running and expects you to keep up.
