The Great Mouse Detective

the-great-mouse-detectiveThe 1980’s were lean years for Disney. Sure, the studio gave us The Fox and the Hound to begin the decade and The Little Mermaid to end it (and start a resurgence for Disney animated features), but the near decade in-between produced some very un-Disney-like choices for theatrical features including 1985’s The Black Cauldron and 1986’s The Great Mouse Detective.

The concept may sound a bit goofy (no pun intended), but The Great Mouse Detective centers around Basil of Baker Street (Barrie Ingham), the world’s foremost mouse detective. As the film opens Basil and a doctor recently returned from Afghanistan, Dr. David Q. Dawson (Val Bettin), are approached by young Olivia Flaversham (Susanne Pollatschek) whose father (Alan Young) has been kidnapped by the evil Professor Ratigan (Vincent Price). Ratigan wants the toy maker to create a clockwork version of the Queen (Eve Brenner) which he can use to rule all of England.

Captain Gregson (Aidan Quinn) calls in Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) to consult on a case involving a man murdered and robbed on returning home. Holmes quickly identifies the man’s neighbor as the thief, but the identity of the murderer takes a little more time. While Gregson’s junior detective (Jon Michael Hill) is perfectly willing to lay the murder at the feet of the opportunistic neighbor, Holmes believes a woman is responsible, even if she was in a coma when the crime occurred.

Taking a page from the success of Sherlock, BBC’s modern-day interpretation of Sherlock Holmes, CBS gives us Elementary which stars Jonny Lee Miller as the drug addicted, but brilliant, former Scotland Yard consultant recently relocated to the United States and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson, a personal live-in doctor hired by Sherlock’s father to help him transition from the rehabilitation center back to, as she puts it, “everyday life.” For Sherlock this means picking up where he left off by becoming a consulting detective in New York City.

Sherlock – The Complete Second Season

sherlock-season-two-blu-rayFormer Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss (who does double duty by playing Sherlock’s brother Mycroft Holmes) continue their reimagining of Sherlock Holmes in modern day London. The Second Season starts out with one of Holmes’ most famous cases and the introduction of “The Woman,” followed by a demon hound loose on the moors, and ends with the fall, and apparent death, of the detective at the hands of Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott).

Of the three episodes from this season, the first (“A Scandal in Belgravia“) is my favorite. The episode introduces the character of Irene Adler (Lara Pulver), the only character to ever best Holmes in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories. Pulver makes a deliciously conniving Adler and brings out a side in this version of Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) we had not seen before.
