Silver Surfer

The Defenders #2

defenders-2-coverThe second issue of the new series finds the newly gathered team fighting Prestor John and the forces of Avalon who wish to use the rampaging Black Hulk to break through reality so they might finally journey home. Hmm, a comic where a super-powered being punches reality hard enough to make it shatter… where have I heard that before? Oh yeah, here.

Defenders #2 isn’t really a good comic. It’s not bad, by any means, but it’s certainly disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, the comic does have some very enjoyable moments such as Betty Ross‘ reaction to Doctor Strange trying to scare her and Red She Hulk attempting to get her Big Ass Sword back. In fact, anything revolving around the comic’s most ridiculous member works really well.

There are several odd choices, chief among them is a narrator with insight into both the Defenders and the forces of Avalon who is never identified. Only an omnipresent observer is possible, but the narration doesn’t fit a character like Uatu The Watcher.

Annihilators #4 (of 4)

annihilators-4-coverI’m more than a little sad this series is already over. Sure, I gave up trying to make sense of the main story’s plot sometime during the last issue, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t fun!

In the A story the Annihilators try to prevent the evil Skrull plot to release the Dire Wraiths… or something like that. Like i said, I stopped trying to make sense of this story awhile back. But it’s got hugely powered characters like the Silver Surfer, Ronan, Beta-Ray Bill and Quasar kicking some serious butt. By itself this isn’t enough to recommend but…

The B story also concludes as Rocket Raccoon and Groot attempt to prevent the Star Thief from escaping his prison. Their plan? Let’s just say it involves one of the most humiliating (and adorable) moments of Rocket Raccon’s life. Awesome.

The final panels of each story seem to suggest we’ll be seeing both of these groups again (hopefully at a much-reduced cover price). Even though I love the Silver Surfer, I’m far more interested in a quirky comic about a new Guardians of a Galaxy than further adventures of the Annihilators. Worth a look.

Annihilators #2

annihilators-2-coverThe second issue is full of action as Silver Surfer, Beta Ray Bill, Gladiator, Quasar, Ronan the Accuser and the Space Knights battle Doctor Dredd and the Dire Wraiths.

In the B-story Rocket Raccoon rescues his friend Groot from the Isle of Punishment only to discover he’s put every living thing on Planet X in terrible danger. More clown assassins, psycho woodpeckers, some awfully good puns, an annoying computer, and our first glimpses into the secrets of Rocket Raccoon’s past make this one impossible to put down.

Both stories get equal time this time around and both provide great moments. The cosmic level of the Annihilators matched with the craziness of Rocket and Groot is a great combination. The level of adorableness Timothy Green II infuses the art the B-story with (particularly the look of Rocket Raccoon) is just wonderful. If you only bought one comic this week I hope it was this one. It’s rare I’m happy paying $5 for a single issue, but this time I think I got my money’s worth. Must-read.

Annihilators #1

annihilators-1-coverTaking the place of the now disbanded (and mostly dead) Guardians of the Galaxy comes a new super-powered cosmic squad of “Annihilators’ including the Silver Surfer, Beta Ray Bill, Gladiator, Quasar, Ronan the Accuser, and Cosmo.

A new member Ikon, a Space Knight, arrives only to quickly anger almost every member of the team and almost lead to it disbanding before fighting a single battle. Thankfully, a crisis arises and the Annihilators set out to stop the Space Knight’s arch-nemesis Doctor Dredd from freeing the Dire Wraiths from their prison.

The lighter side comes in the form of a B-story focused on Rocket Raccoon working in the mail room (where he was hired to fulfill the company’s quota of cute sentient animals). Things aren’t going great for the former Guardian, and then someone sends him a homicidal clown in the mail. Don’t you hate it when that happens? The ensuing battle (and getting fired) lead the intrepid hero in search of his old pal Groot, but he’s unprepared for what he finds.
