Spider-Gwen

Ghost-Spider #4

Ghost-Spider #4 comic reviewThings seem to be looking up for our hero. Gwen has managed to balance life between two separate Earths well, although there are forces in both worlds looking at her with keen interest. Miles Warren‘s obsession with this new Gwen Stacy leads the professor/super-villain to follow our hero back to her own Earth (where another Jackal and Man-Wolf have their own plans for revenge against Ghost-Spider). Will there be a Jackal team-up? Or will the pair fight each other for Gwen?

Keeping busy by crime-fighting on both Earths (we get to see a little of this as Spider-Gwen defuses a hostage situation at a hospital), attending her classes, and even making band practice without a sweat, but despite appearances there are issues Gwen is just starting to notice (for instance her missing classmate).

Ghost-Spider #3

Ghost-Spider #3 comic reviewThe third issue of Ghost-Spider could be called “The Jackal of Two Worlds” as it showcases not one but two versions of Miles Warren obsessed with young Miss Stacy. There’s not much action here, although we do see Gwen break-up a robbery at one point and we do get to see a little web-slinging as well. Instead writer Seanan McGuire and artist Takeshi Miyazawa focus more of our heroine fitting in on a new world and in a new school. In whatever world he exists, it appears the Jackal is obsessed with Gwen Stacy.

In her home dimension, the Man-Wolf and Miles Warren plot for their revenge against the super-hero. While in the proper Marvel Universe, Warren enlists the help of one of his students to spy (even going so far as to give her some of his super-villain juice) and help him determine just who this new Gwen Stacy is.

Ghost Spider Annual #1

Ghost Spider Annual #1 comic reviewGhost Spider Annual #1 follows the events of the recently relaunched series where Spider-Gwen has left her home dimension and arrived in the middle of the MCU to go to college (and do a little crime busting on the side under the new name Ghost Spider). Still getting into the swing of things (so to speak), the story looks into the early days of Gwen’s time at college taking a swing around campus following an lecture.

Spider-Gwen trips a long-dormant trap left for Spider-Man by the villain Arcade. To escape, she will be tested by wave after wave of fake versions of Spider-Man’s most notorious enemies (and even this dimension’s wall crawler himself).

Ghost-Spider #1

Ghost-Spider #1 comic reviewWhile not quite as quick-witted as the final issues of Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider, the new series centered around Spider-Gwen leaving her own dimension to come to college and fight crime in New York gets a solid opening. If the first issue is any indication, it looks like the comic will split time between Gwen exploring her new home and events back in her dimension (which may eventually effect her new life).

Spider-Man guest-stars here playing the older brother, helping Gwen get into college, and offering a friendly shoulder when she needs it. However, unlike his appearance in the final issue of the previous series (where the comic had fun with his life being nearly as screwed up as Gwen’s) here Peter is a bit more in control and recast in more mentor than friend. (And the giant rat, while funny, is no swarm of Nazi dinosaur bees.)

Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #10

Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider #10 comic reviewSpider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider comes to a close with its tenth and final issue (but don’t fret, true believers, our girl will be back in the all-new Ghost-Spider series). Issue #10 brings us back around to the trouble of Gwen‘s malfunctioning powers. In need of help, she dimensionally jumps to find one of the smartest people she knows.

There’s much to enjoy here including Gwen’s inner monologues, the dialogue between Spider-Gwen and Spider-Man, and the completely unexpected appearance of a C-list Spidey villain Swarm. (You know, the Nazi scientist turned into a swarm of bees that wraps itself around a skeleton? Of course you do!) What’s more difficult than dealing with Swarm? How about a Nazi Dinosaur Swarm!
