Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad #10

The Suicide Squad‘s space mission comes to an end after a battle with Thanagarians, getting captured by Sojourner Mullein, and getting locked up in exactly the prison where Waller knew they would be taken. Making their way back to Earth with the package Waller wanted the issue ends setting up the confrontation between Waller’s squad and that of Rick Flag. May the best squad win.

The issue is a fair middle issue to a larger arc with the lowest body count so far (unless you count Culebra, who survives death yet again). It is notable for several cameos, more of Ambush Bug‘s fourth-wall-breaking narration, cementing Major Force as the most dickish member of the team, and making good on the romantic tension between Match and Nocturna (how exactly will this play out?).

Suicide Squad #9

Rick Flag has raided various Task Force X facilities putting together his own team while Amanda Waller has retreated to a secluded island base and plans to use her remaining troops for a space mission. It seems Flag and Waller are in an arms race to put together the best Task Force X team, and Waller has an eye on a prisoner in Oa.

The reveal of the target of Waller’s interest turns out to be a complete unknown, leaving the slow build-up without any immediate payoff. We do get plenty of dysfunctional team antics, some fun third-wall breakage by Ambush Bug, and an appearance by Sojourner Mullein, but it will be at least another month before we learn the reasoning behind Waller’s big gamble. Waller’s prize is creepy (in a Doctor Who kinda way), but what exactly is he?

Suicide Squad #8

A Suicide Squad comic narrated by Ambush Bug? Okay, you’ve got my attention (even if Bug’s ADHD does have the story going in seemingly every direction all at once). We get Peacemaker vs. Swamp Thing, the Suicide Squad fighting a group of former (now dead) members raised from Hell on the Rock of Eternity, and a surprise guest in Major Force. And that’s just the first 12 pages.

This is a seriously crazy issue. Even if Ambush Bug’s narration does drone on at times, the humor works and despite the number if irons in the fire including governments coming after Waller, Rick Flag putting together his own team, the machinations of Talon, and now Peacemaker unleashed, Suicide Squad #8 works as a good start for new readers and a nice summary to catch the rest of us up on everything the current volume of the title has going. Let the craziness continue.

Suicide Squad #6

Suicide Squad #6 comic reviewWaller sends the Squad to Earth-3 after the captured Bloodsport and his original target Black Siren (although Wallers seems more interested in the latter than the former). Elsewhere, back on Prime Earth, Peacemaker takes a team in search of Swamp Thing in a plot thread that still hasn’t gotten going yet.

The second issue arc offers another appearance of Ultraman, although this time the Squad has a Superboy to help even the odds. The mystery about Superboy comes up again in this issue, and it will likely only deepen with the appearance of an unexpected hero when the the Squad returns home.
