Usagi Yojimbo

Usagi Yojimbo #141

usagi-yojimbo-141-coverAfter 27 years, and three publishers, Stan Sakai pens the 200th appearance of Usagi Yojimbo in his own title. And, thankfully, he’s not done yet.

The rabbit ronin’s wanderings take him through a rainstorm into a small village where a local craftsman is carving 200 stone jizo in hopes that the sacrifice will lead to the end of Kaba and his gang who have taken refuge in the village after the other members were killed.

The bandits play on the ronin’s compassion for the townspeople. After forcing him to disarm the group beat the ronin into an inch of his life. It’s that last inch, however, that allows Usagi to slay the bandits and drive Kaba from the town.

Sakai doesn’t try to give us s super-sized story for his milestone. Instead he gives us more of what we’ve come to expect from him every month – a strong tale of Usagi Yojimbo standing up for justice for those who can’t stand up on their own. In a nice touch, the back cover of the comic is a collection of all 200 covers featuring the character. Worth a look.

Usagi Yojimbo #140

usagi-yojimbo-140-coverThe latest issue of Usagi Yojimbo wraps up the two-issue murder mystery arc as Miyamoto Usagi and Inspector Ishida attempt to solve not one but two murders that occurred in the inn on the same rainy night.

The comic begins with a panel of the list of suspects for the murder of the paper merchant and the gang leader being held captive in the inn. Our pair of heroes will whittle down the list of suspects over the course of the comic. I’m not going to give away the ending for either crime, but rest assured Usagi and Ishida uncover the culprits for both crimes.

It may be light on action, but writer and artist Stan Sakai gives us yet another strong issue surrounding the travels of the rabbit ronin. But I wouldn’t expect anything less. It also includes a great stare down between Usagi and the poet Saburo’s bodyguard Benki. Best of the week.

Usagi Yojimbo #139

usagi-yojimbo-139-coverUsagi‘s wanderings lead him to cross paths with an old friend when he comes upon Inspector Ishida fending off an attack by an entire band of ruffians.

After helping his old friend dispatch the last of the killers Uasgi learns Ishida is transporting a prisoner, one of two brothers who lead this nefarious band, to justice. Usagi agrees to accompany him and the two warriors and their prisoner set off for their destination only to be waylaid by the weather when they must make a stop at an inn.

It’s here Ishida and Usagi run into an assortment of characters including the inn keeper, who despite closing the establishment can’t turn a blind eye to weary travelers in bad weather, a pompous aristocrat who fancies himself a poet and his bodyguard, and a humble paper dealer and his family.

The storm outside, the prisoner, and the odd mix of personalities under one roof is a good set-up for a murder mystery. I won’t tell you who is killed, or why, but I will say I’m definitely looking forward to picking up the next issue.

Usagi Yojimbo #136

usagi-yojimbo-136-coverThe rabbit ronin’s travels lead him to cross paths with Suzuki-Sensei, a friend to his master Katsuichi, and moves further into the countryside that is threatened by the attacks of the mysterious and deadly Red Scorpion Gang (which may be far closer than Usagi Yojimbo realizes).

As we’ve come to expect, Stan Sakai delivers another strong issue. I especially enjoyed the duel between Usagi and Suzuki-Sensei in front of his students, and the split-second decision Usagi must make whether or not to win the match. Usagi makes the right decision, which may prove more important than he realizes as this storyline continues.

This issue begins a multi-story arc and the final page delivers all we need to know about the troubles the rabbit ronin has in store for him next month. If you haven’t been reading Usagi (what’s wrong with you?) this is actually a really good story to jump in and get your feet wet with the character and his world. Worth a look.

Usagi Yojimbo #135

usagi-yojimbo-135Usagi Yojimbo‘s travels take him on a trek through secret mountain trails and another encounter with the deadly Lord of Owls.

The mysterious villain kills two groups of warriors, the first in a flashback told to Usagi by his mountain guide, and the second before Usagi’s eyes as the mysterious creature mercilessly strikes down a band of outlaws disguised as monks.

As a single issue tale this one doesn’t do much to stand-out, but from the verbal fencing between Usagi and the Lord of Owls you get the feeling writer Stan Sakai is laying the groundwork for an important future tale. On its own it’s good story, but I wanted a little more. I also felt the art was slightly below Sakai’s usual level of quality. Then again, I’ve been reading through a glut of very strong classic Usagi stories recently, so it’s possible I’m judging this one too harshly by comparison.

Fans of the character will no doubt want to pick this one up, but for casual readers this issue delivers more on promise than execution.
