“I Am the Black Widow” concludes as Black Widow, Yelena, and Anya Corazon take on the super-powered Apogee and The Olio. Lucy, refusing to sit on the sidelines even knowing her powers could kill her at any moment, also jumps into the fray allowing the cure to be released (and leaving a whole bunch of ticked off individuals who aren’t too keen on suddenly loosing their super-powers). It’s a win, but not necessarily a clean with for our heroes leaving resentment and distrust in their wake.

As has been the trend with the comic, we also get another addition to Natasha’s team with the unexpected arrival of Kate Bishop providing some much-needed back-up.

Black Widow #9 picks up immediately from the previous issue’s cliffhanger with Yelena dead and Black Widow surrounded by the Olio. Enter Lucy with the timely save, and a strategic retreat for the three women. Given the gravity of the situation Natasha was in, things are wrapped up rather quickly, but once out of danger the heroes can begin to regroup.

Anya Corazon and Craig are woven into the story as Widow convinces Apogee‘s former employee about the deadly dangers of his experiments leading Craig (who apparently has some of his own powers) into investigating a cure (although the issue teases the idea that Lucy may not want the cure, even if it can save her life).

Black Widow, Yelena Belova, and Anya Corazon continue their investigation into Apogee and The Olio. Spider-Girl’s time as a spy comes to a sudden end when she’s forced to reveal herself to prevent others from ingesting the serum which can give volunteers super-powers but ultimately killed Gumby (something Lucy still hasn’t worked through).

Black Widow #8 offers another solid issue filled with some fun humor (I particularly liked Anya’s musings of being a spy and the back-and-forth between the Widows when Natasha saves Yelena from the Olio). While Elena Casagrande’s art is certainly acceptable and fits the story, I will admit that I’m missing the more stylish art of Rafael de Latorre more and more as we get further away from the comic’s first arc.
