The second episode of the season returns an old friend as the glee club takes its first tenative steps to Nationals with a boot camp for the corps less talented dancers. Meanwhile, Rachel (Lea Michele) tries out for the school musical, which Artie (Kevin McHale) will be directing with the help of Coach Beiste (Dot Jones) and Emma (Jayma Mays), Brittany (Heather Morris) begins her campaign to get Kurt (Chris Colfer) elected for class president, and Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) continues her crusade to end arts funding in Ohio by creating a documentary focusing on how Quinn’s (Dianna Agron) life was derailed by glee club.

This episode also marks the return of Idina Menzel to the show as McKinley High’s second show choir teacher, hired by Sugar’s (Vanessa Lengies) father after she was denied the chance to join New Directions. Although her return feels more than a little forced, it does allow for the reunion of Rachel and Shelby to give the episode its first musical number (nearly 20-minutes in) with “Somewhere” from West Side Story.

Although it’s extremely light in music numbers (a total of three, all from muicals, with no grand finale) the episode does have some fun moments including Kurt and Rachel performing a scene from Romeo and Juliet, a difficult choice for Blaine (Darren Criss), and a pair of good scenes between Brittany and Santana (Naya Rivera) and Kurt and his dad (Mike O’Malley) concerning unicorns (what else?). Not a great episode by any means, but it did further storylines for most of the characters (although I think I’m not going to like where Quinn’s is headed).

  1. Kurt Hummel singing Barbara Streisand is too perfect; I wouldn’t be surprised if he was a big fan in real life. It certainly would be a dream come true to be able to act and sing as yourself in many ways on TV. I think if they made me into a sitcom character people would be rolling their eyes and groaning the whole time. I missed most of the first season which I need to go back and watch. That first season was about the baby between Quinn and Puck, but now that story is back in the picture. I’m glad that I can get the episodes on DVD.
