Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Repairs

As Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) decide Skye (Chloe Bennet) missed out on the proper rights of hazing and pranks by not going through S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s academy, Coulson (Clark Gregg) and Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) talk with a woman blamed for a series of accidents in a small town which appear to have been triggered by telekentic powers. However, Hanna (Laura Seay) refuses to accept responsibility for the odd occurrences believing she is being haunted which is actually far closer to the truth as one of her co-workers (Robert Baker), caught in the explosion that trapped him between dimensions, has been stalking her both before and after the accident he is responsible for.

First through the pranks of Fitz and Simmons, and later through Coulson telling Skye the true story, “Repairs” lets the audience in on May’s backstory and the tragedy that earned her the nickname Calvary while changing her from the more free-spirited agent Coulson once knew. And events come full circle for May when she uses her own experiences to talk down the dangerous “ghost” who has actually been trying to protect Hanna by lashing out at those he believes wish her harm.

Picking up sometime after the end of the last episode, Ward (Brett Dalton) and May’s one-night stand has become an ongoing (although still secret, and still kind of bland) relationship. Even though she doesn’t know about the pair, the main tension of the episode comes between Skye and May whose approach to the woman one sees as a threat while the other views only as a victim takes some time to work through. The prank subplot doesn’t really work, and has its share of truly groan-worthy moments as it awkwardly introduced May’s story (which could have been done a number of other ways). It’s only other purpose was to set-up the episode’s final joke which shows us the side of May no one on-board the plane other than Coulson (and possibly Ward) has seen.
