Smallville - Leech

Superman Sunday takes us back to Smallville, Kansas, and the time Clark Kent (Tom Welling) lost his powers. Like the Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman episode “A Bolt from the Blue,” Clark transfers his powers to another person in “Leech.” Unlike the Lois & Clark episode where both characters had powers at the same time, in “Leech” Clark is rendered human with all of his powers transferred to a classmate following a freak lightning strike. Unfortunately for everyone involved, Eric Summers (Shawn Ashmore) isn’t the most stable person to be granted the powers of Superman.

There are really to aspects at work in “Leech” showing us what someone else might do with Clark’s powers as well as giving us a glimpse of how Clark would be without them. Realizing Eric also has his weaknesses, Clark uses meteor rock to weaken him eventually leading to a confrontation between the pair near powerlines which, a bit conveniently in a rushed conclusion, restore things back to the status quo. The episode is also notable for kicking of a Lana (Kristin Kreuk) B-story involving the Talon which will continue to be a focus for the next few episodes. Eric would return in Season Three with another pair of Clark’s enemies for a chance at revenge.
