Stargirl - Summer School: Chapter One TV review

Stargirl returns for its Second Season at the end of the school year. Although the town has been quiet since the defeat of the Injustice Society of America, the various members of the new Justice Society of America aren’t without their own issues. Coutney‘s (Brec Bassinger) hyper-vigilance has led her to flunk both English and History, putting a kybosh on the family’s summer plans. Beth (Anjelika Washington) is still struggling with the loss of Chuck, and the discovery of her parents’ divorce doesn’t do anything to help her mental state. Speaking of mental states, Yolanda (Yvette Monreal) is still haunted by Brainwave‘s death and Rick‘s (Cameron Gellman) emotions are still running hot as he blows up at at teacher for suggesting he wasn’t smart enough to pass the final without cheating.

It’s no big surprise that the season premiere is mostly about set-up and teasing what’s to come. Along with their personal issues, Rick also continues to search for Solomon Grundy, Pat (Luke Wilson) gets some unwanted help with S.T.R.I.P.E., and the show teases us that the quiet our heroes have been enjoying isn’t going to last. Along with setting up Eclipso as the big threat, we also see the return of Cindy Burman (Meg DeLacy) who plans on putting together a next generation version of the Injustice Society, and then there’s that face from the past (Joel McHale) continuing his journey to Blue Valley. We also get the first introduction of Green Lantern’s daughter (Ysa Penarejo) who arrives to retrieve his father’s lantern. Despite she and Courtney getting off on the wrong foot, has the JSA found a new member?
