Supergirl - Legion of Super-Heroes television review

Supergirl returns from it’s winter hiatus with Reign (Odette Annable) declaring brutal justice on National City, Mon-El (Chris Wood) calling in the help of Brainiac-5 (Jesse Rath) to deal with a comatose Kara (Melissa Benoist) trapped in her own mind, and the DEO desperate to stand against against the evil Kryptonian without the help of the Legion who are hesitant to take any action which may affect their future. Of course, the episode’s title does give away the fact they the Legion taking some action before the closing credits roll. Given the revelation that Reign may have a few friends of her own, it looks like Kara is going to need all the help she can get.

Eventually the threat of Reign, and the DEO’s ineptitude at stopping her, overcomes the team’s need for caution and Mon-El, Brainiac-5, and Saturn Girl (Amy Jackson) join the fray. While they can’t stop Reign, they do slow her down long enough for Kara to get back in the game. While simple, the Kara coma sequences help our heroine work through some recent self-doubt and rediscover the human part of herself she was so willing to turn her back on not so long ago. While it’s hard to see Rath’s version of Brainiac-5 growing into a potential love interest, as has been done in other elsewhere, he does what he can through some questionable make-up and costume decisions.

By the end of the episode Kara is back, the Legion seems to be sticking around, and it looks like Reign has a new acolyte in Thomas Coville (Chad Lowe).Bon Jovi references aside, the goofiest moment of the episode comes with Kara being out of action creating an opportunity for J’onn (David Harewood) to stand-in for the “sick” reporter and struggle with giving Lena (Katie McGrath) relationship advice about having kissed Superman’s black friend James “Don’t Call Me Jimmy” Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), much to the delight of Kara in the episode’s epilogue.
