The latest episode continues the team-up of Kara (Melissa Benoist) and Lena (Katie McGrath) as the pair head to Kaznia to investigate the evil plans of Lex Luthor (Jon Cryer). Not only will they find multiple versions of Eve (Andrea Brooks), thanks to Lex playing with super-hero powers, but they also uncover Luthor’s big secret in the “Red Daughter.” There are at least three separate moments in “Will The Real Miss Tessmacher Please Stand Up?” where Kara not only could have told Lena her secret but should have. There can be little doubt at this point that Lena will learn the truth from someone other than Kara likely splintering their friendship and pushing her down the super-villain/nemesis road, although for now they appear to be solidly together in the hunt for Lex and the other Supergirl.
Following the loss of his wife, Ben Lockwood‘s (Sam Witwer) story continues to take an ever darker turn and he usurps power within the DEO to target all aliens, and, when his men fail to follow his orders, takes matters into his own hands by injecting himself with Lena’s experimental serum. Because it’s a super-hero show, Lockwood not only survives but becomes super-powered (although I think the writers could have earned major points by having the bigot drop dead by his own hand the second he plunged the hypodermic into his chest). Lockwood’s rage helps lead further to sides being drawn as James “Don’t Call Me Jimmy” Olsen, (Mehcad Brooks), Dreamer (Nicole Maines), Brainiac-5 (Jesse Rath), and the returning J’onn (David Harewood) all chose to stand between the DEO shock troops and the alien civilians. Unfortunately for our heroes, it appears the President of the United States is on the other side.
The last subplot to the episode is disconnected from current events as Alex (Chyler Leigh) is given the opportunity to adopt (only to have it taken away at the last moment). While “Will The Real Miss Tessmacher Please Stand Up?” makes good use of Kelly (Azie Tesfai) in helping Alex cope with the various emotions involved, the episode never really sells us on the idea that this is going to happen (or maybe I’ve just seen far to may shows pull the exact same last-second bait-and-switch). That said, the writers do some serious groundwork to lay the foundation for Alex’s next romance (should the show choose to move in that direction).
