Robin‘s (Scott Menville) leadership is put to the test when Beast Boy (Greg Cipes) turns into a gorilla, begins living as a monkey, and even rests control of the team from the Boy Wonder. The leader flexes his muscles by sending the team on important missions such as protecting a monkey’s natural habitat (the monkey bars at the nearby playground), freeing all the monkeys at the zoo, and fighting the natural enemy of monkeys (crocodiles).
Needing his friend back, and sick of bananas, Cyborg (Khary Payton) helps Robin reclaim his role as the team’s alpha male (through a series of ridiculous challenges) while Starfire (Hynden Walch) and Raven (Tara Strong) each become more ape-like under the command of their new leader. Eventually Robin returns to reclaim his rightful spot, although the time under Beast Boy’s “leadership” appears to have left its mark.
The episode turns Robin into a whiny bitch for nearly the entire story and doesn’t make much of an effort to explain why his teammates (especially Raven) go along with Beast Boy’s rule. That said, the craziness caused by the situation produces some fun moments (such as Starfire breaking the time-space continuum while exercising, Robin trying to give an elephant a bath, and the tickle challenge).
Beast Boy is awesome
