Usagi Yojimbo #11

Usagi Yojimbo #11 comic reviewUsagi Yojimbo #11 kicks off a four-part tale of Miyamoto Usagi returning to the village he grew up. After being injured, Usagi drifts down river where he is found by the surprised Mariko, the love of his life, and nursed back to health. Mariko’s husband Kenichi is less pleased to see the return of his childhood rival (Sakai offers flashbacks of the misadventures of the three as children).

After thinking better of returning all the way home, fate has brought the rabbit ronin full circle despite his intentions of giving his village a wide berth. There is mention of Usagi and Mariko’s son as Usagi learns he has been sent to learn from the same master who instructed him, but Jotaro himself doesn’t make an appearance here.

Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys: The Death of Nancy Drew #3

Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys: The Death of Nancy Drew #3 comic reviewThe truth that Nancy Drew is still alive is kept in Nancy Drew & The Hardy Boys: The Death of Nancy Drew #3, despite an encounter with the Syndicate agent known as the Barber that leaves one of the two Hardy boys in the hospital.

Presented from Frank‘s point-of-view, the big theme of the issue is how neither Hardy is able to deny Nancy Drew anything she asks for (even if it costs him an ear). Another tussle with the Barber provides a small win for the trio who are able to prevent an assassination at the town’s big press conference. However, the person who was employing the Barber is still out there meaning Nancy needs to keep playing dead and no one can go home just yet.

Young Justice #17

Young Justice #17 comic reviewI kinda love this issue. Taking place after the dust has cleared between the epic battle between the Justice League and the Legion of Doom we get a quiet standalone story featuring the League and Young Justice doing clean-up in Metropolis and teenager Yolanda Chan being bowled over at what she is witnessing.

There are some nice moments of camaraderie here as the Young Justice team continues to gel along with some sweet mentor/apprentice conversations between League members and the Young Justice heroes (the best of this involves Wonder Woman checking in with Wonder Girl and the Flash, thankfully minus all the extra crappy New 52 additions to his costume, catching up with Impulse at super-speed).

Black Cat #12

Black Cat #12 comic reviewBlack Cat versus Iron Man, ’nuff said. After stealing herself some Stark armor, Black Cat leads Iron Man across the city on a joyride filled with some fun banter and a solid twist that leaves old Shellhead shell shocked. It’s the perfect culmination to Felicia’s recent notable thefts.

Black Cat #12 is the best issue of the series. Sadly it’s also the final issue of the series. Despite being in the middle of the year-long arc of Felicia’s war with Odessa Drake and the Thieves Guild, Black Cat has apparently become a COVID casualty. Still, the story teased at the end of the issue, which would have appeared in Black Cat #12 featuring a fight with Queen Cat will apparently take place in the upcoming Black Cat: Queen in Black (although no word yet on Felicia’s war with the guild).

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #273

G.I. JOE: A Real American Hero #273 comic reviewAfter several issues of lead-up, the rescue of Throwdown (who Cobra still mistakenly believe is the original Snake Eyes) begins with the first of many forces sneaking into the Cobra underground laboratory as others including the Arashikage and teams led by Zartan and Destro arrive in Springfield as well.

Inside the bunker, Throwdown has already started his escape and has taken both Cobra Commander and Dr. Mindbender hostage, keeping all the Cobra eyes turned inward and unaware of what is about to rain down on them.
