West Coast Avengers #3

West Coast Avengers #3 gives us an explanation for multiple Ultrons (including others we haven’t yet seen) along with the first confrontation from the Ultron prophet and the West Coast Avengers featuring their own Ultron, bringing the two face-to-face. Other than the backstory which adds some context to the current situation, there’s not much of note in the issue as the confrontation ultimately is left unresolved.

Spidey Super Stories #1

Spidey Saturday takes us back to the very first issue of Spidey Super Stories which explored the origins of Spider-Man in the main story, properly introducing him for the new comic with ties to The Electric Company‘s Spider-Man shorts, while also providing some back-up Spidey stories. Skipping over the tragic aspect of Spidey’s origins, the story gives us the spider-bite, nerdy Peter’s lonely existence, the classic scenes of Peter testing out his powers after avoiding a car, and creating the costume and web-shooters to fight crime as Spider-Man. It’s a solid introduction for young readers.

Space Ghost #9

Space Ghost #9 wraps up the Metallus arc with a battered, but not yet beaten, Space Ghost with Metallus while Jan, Jace, and Blip  take on the ships and robotic minions threatening to destroy yet another world. Rewriting Space Ghost’s history to make Metallus responsible for the death of Space Ghost’s own world and family (thus creating the spacegoing vigilante) ups the stakes in the issue (even if the tease of our  hero contemplating taking the villain’s life isn’t solid in a way for it to be possible to take seriously).

Doctor Doom & Rocket Raccoon

One of several unusual one-shot pairings, Doctor Doom & Rocket Raccoon brings Rocket to Latveria to help Doom with a project involving travelling backwards in time to before the Big Bang. It’s a bit of a screwy concept, but it does play on the idea of Doom respecting Rocket’s technological know-how and needing his help to make his latest invention work. I will say, it’s been a bit since I’ve been interested in anything Doom related (see his run as Iron Man) and this does offer some intrigue. The most obvious solution to the set up, which is really just an excuse to have fun putting these two characters together, would be the failure of the experiment. However, that’s not how the comic ends.

Wonder Woman #17

After dragging the secret organization into the light with the help of Detective Chimp and Clark Kent, this time it’s Wonder Girls who stop by for a visit taking out the Sovereign’s protection by taking down several of the super-villains hired in their fight against Wonder Woman.
