Captain America review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to one of the more unusual adaptations of Captain America. 1979’s made-for-television movie Captain America is a bizarre experience that reminds you just how far Marvel has come over the years in licensing their characters for live-action films. Set in the 1970s, Reb Brown stars as Steve Rogers. This Steve isn’t a World War II veteran. Instead, he’s a former soldier and dirt bike racer, now retired beach bum. Dr. Simon Mills (Len Birman), a colleague of Steve’s father, reaches out with an offer. There’s this serum you see which will only work for Steve. A couple of attempts on Steve’s life, one leaving him near death, lead to Steve being reborn as Captain America, a name we’re told his father’s enemies used as an insult, or at least a Six Million Dollar Man approximation of what Captain America would look like on a shoestring budget.

Superman - The Mechanical Monsters review

Throwback Tuesday takes a look back to one of the earliest appearance of the Man of Tomorrow on film in another of the Fleischer Studios’ Superman cartoons. “The Mechanical Monsters” offers us a nameless mad scientist using a army of robots to steal from Metropolis. The cartoon relies on one of the oldest Superman tropes of Lois Lane getting in over her head while investigating a story and needing Superman to swoop in for the rescue (although Lois does get the story). As with “The Mad Scientist,” the cartoon is most notable for its style while relying on mostly-silent storytelling (which includes the head-scratcher of Superman somehow finding the captured Lois after loosing the robot at one point). The cartoon also features the first animated sequence of Clark Kent slipping into a phone booth and emerging as Superman.

Stargirl - Shiv (Part Two) television review

With Courtney (Brec Bassinger) sidelined given her injuries at the hands of Cindy Burman (Meg DeLacy), it falls on the rest of the team to pick up the slack in “Shiv Part Two.” Pat (Luke Wilson) takes steps to explain Courtney’s injuries while her friends look to uncover the truth about who Cindy’s parents really are. The later ends up in an undercover mission for the unusual pairing of Pat and Beth (Anjelika Washington) as father and daughter (when forced to create a cover story on the spot). It also leaves Courtney alone when Cindy comes calling. The last two episodes have turned me around on the mean girl with far more going on than most realize, although her father’s disapproval of her recent actions makes you wonder how much of Cindy we’ll see in the near future.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #105 comicsBefore throwing the Turtles into the next big arc, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #105 offers an interlude for our heroes to grow, relax, reflect, and build on what they’ve learned since reuniting in New York. This quiet issue is full of wonderful small moments for several characters. While evil lurks on the periphery, it doesn’t intrude.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #105 offers a couple of long-overdue moments where my favorite of the characters created for this comic is concerned. First, Raphael finally lets down his guard and allows Alopex in. Second, Raphael, Donatello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo all welcome the arctic fox as an official member of the Splinter Clan.
