Pretty Little Liars - The Complete Fifth SeasonThe Fifth Season of Pretty Little Liars saw the return of Alison DiLaurentis (Sasha Pieterse) to Rosedale, the (apparent) death of a major character, a Christmas ball, Alison arrested for murder and Hanna (Ashley Benson) framed as an accessory, and the discovery of A’s storage locker, all leading up to the Liars‘ abduction in the season finale.

Highlights of the season include the show’s 100th episode, trouble in New York in the season premiere, an amusing dinner party at the Marin household, dance lessons, Alison’s return to Rosedale High, an investigation into Shana‘s (Aeriel Miranda) death, Hanna searching for solace at the bottom of a bottle, Ella Montgomery‘s (Holly Marie Combs) almost wedding, a confrontation between Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and Melissa (Torrey DeVitto), the end of Paily, more snooping at Radley, another funeral, the introduction of a new love interest for Emily (Shay Mitchell), the odd behavior of Aria‘s (Lucy Hale) little brother, Spencer’s adventures in England, and Alison’s trial and verdict.

Daredevil - Shadows in the Glass

For a show that’s shown us only glimpses of the main character’s past I have mixed feelings about devoting nearly an entire episode to examine the past of the Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio). One of the lessons of Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight is that we are given multiple possible origins for the Joker but the truth of his past isn’t important to who the man is today. Wilson Fisk is our bad guy, he’s the head of organized crime in New York with plans of branding himself to the public as a philanthropist. What happened in his past to create the man he is isn’t necessary information for Daredevil (Charlie Cox) to defeat him. Of course the fact the Arrow already did the exact same storyline with Brother Blood (murdered his father as a kid, attempted to take over the city as a shadowy figure, pretending his mother is dead while hiding her away in a private institution) makes the episode feel like slightly under-heated leftovers.

Convergence: Shazam! #2

Convergence: Shazam! #2Convergence: Shazam! #2 concludes the Marvel Family’s arc in DC’s big crossover by pitting Captain Marvel against the Victorian Age Batman from Batman: Gotham by Gaslight. In comic tradition the two heroes battle before teaming up against Mr. Mind who has gathered Batman’s enemies together to make a new Monster Society of Evil led by his steam-punk-powered Mr. Atom.

Convergence: Shazam! #2 may not have the Big Red Cheese factor of the previous issue, or enough of the supporting Marvel Family characters for my tastes, but Gaslight Batman is more interesting that I expected (in an odd variation of the Batman vs. Superman fight from The Dark Knight Returns) and the twist of having the heroes work together really helps save the issue from prolonging the battle more than necessary.

With Convergence over I’m hoping this isn’t the last we see of the Marvel Family’s alternative Earth (which is far more interesting than most of the New 52). Worth a look.

[DC, $3.99]
