Godzilla

  • Title: Godzilla (2014)
  • IMDB: link

GodzillaGodzilla returns to the big screen in an American film for the first time since 1998. Although better than Roland Emmerich‘s much despised film, while outdoing the director known for CGI disaster porn, the new version of Godzilla isn’t without its own issues. As a summer popcorn flick the new Godzilla may satisfy in the short term but it’s unlikely to entice me to return to its story anytime soon (if ever).

Opening in 1999 in the Philippines where an ancient monster is awoken before it makes its way to Japan unseen (this happens more than you’d expect in the film) and destroys a nuclear reactor to feed on the radioactivity for the next 15 years, the film jumps forward to present day where the scientist in charge of the facility (Bryan Cranston) still struggles with what really happened. Although much of the extended opening centers around Cranston (which could be trimmed considerably), the movie’s main character is the scientist’s son Lieutenant Ford Brody (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), a bomb disposal expert whose skills will come in quite handy before the end of the film.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Beginning of the End

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. concludes its First Season with an increasingly erratic John Garrett (Bill Paxton) surviving the infusion of the single does of Raina‘s (Ruth Negga) replicated drug while Coulson (Clark Gregg) and his team survive the arrival of the Centipede warriors long enough for Skye (Chloe Bennet) to implant her Trojan Horse inside HYDRA‘s network and follow them back to the head of the snake. By the end of the episode Garrett will be defeated although its unclear how many other heads the secret organization may have had which means we might see some form of it resurface next season.

The Blacklist - Berlin: Conclusion

With Reddington (James Spader) on his way to a new black site from which he will likely never emerge (at least while still breathing), Cooper‘s (Harry Lennix) team performs their final task before being decommissioned by investigating the plane crash and locating a handful of escaped prisoners all of whom were placed on the plane by the mysterious Berlin. With the help of Fitch (Alan Alda), and the power broker’s inside man (Jason Butler Harner), Reddington manages to make his escape and begin searching for answers (partly procured by attacking a Russian ambassador).

Detective Comics #31

Detective Comics #31Given a woman overdosing on a drug Harvey Bullock and his former partner pushed out of Gotham six years ago was found on Bruce Wayne‘s doorstep the detective is mighty suspicious of the billionaire. Although Bruce clears himself by proving he has no Icarus in his system, Bullock is far from satisfied that Wayne has nothing to hide. If he only knew.

Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato’s opening arc on the title continues with some beautiful drawn and inked pages from the pair while setting Bruce Wayne in Bullock’s crosshairs and giving Batman some action of his own including taking on a rather large individual known as Sumo.

Focusing on the detective work of both Batman and Bullock separately as the Dark Knight hears the first mention of “The Squid,” while also throwing in some action and beautiful visuals, DC may have finally put together a creative team to consistently sell me on a Bat-book that doesn’t star Scooby-Doo. Worth a look.
