Luther - Series Three, Episode Four

The final episode of Series Three begins with Luther (Idris Elba) arrested by Gray (Nikki Amuka-Bird) and Stark (David O’Hara) and charged as an accomplice in vigilante Tom Marwood’s (Elliot Cowan) murder of Ripley (Warren Brown) and attempted murder of Mary Day (Sienna Guillory). Despite not being complicit at all in either attack, Stark and Gray bend the facts in a way to make them prove the version of Luther they believe is true. However, the pair quickly loose their prisoner in transport when Luther is abducted by a masked figure who turns out to be Luther’s old friend Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson).

Ame-Comi Girls #7

Ame-Comi Girls #7The Ame-Comi Girls begin a new series with a weird reintroduction of Jesse Quick as a zombie speedster (seriously, wasn’t she a living hero just a few issues back?) and her introduction to the Teen Hellions: a group of alien, undead, and monsterific heroes who need her help to save the world.

Aside from the odd rebooting of Quick’s origins (why not just introduce a new character, it’s not like the DCU is lacking in them?), Ame-Comi Girls #7 is quite fun as the Flash heads out for her night of fun to help Red Raven, Cyborg, Tempest, Beast Girl, and Starfire battle Raven’s daddy Trigon who shows up with an army of demons to take over the world every year or so.

There’s plenty of action and some nice humor between Raven and Trigon as the invasion of Earth by a demon horde all because of one guy’s daddy issues embraces the absurdity of the situation in a way the New 52 never would. Worth a look.

Atomic Robo Presents Real Science Adventures #10

Atomic Robo Presents Real Science Adventures #10The good guys start to fight back in the latest issue of Atomic Robo Presents Real Science Adventures as Nikola Tesla leads his team of Charles Fort, Winfield-Scott Lovecraft, Ehrie “Harry Houdini Weiss, Master Wong Ke-Ying, and Annie Oakley to retrieve his stolen property and make their own strategic strikes on the evil industrialist threesome of Franklin Reade, Robert Trydan, and Jack Wright.

From their attacks, which include the destruction of one of Wright’s factories, Tesla and his team are able to discover the Black Coat agenda and at least begin to prepare themselves for the planned attack from the treacherous combination of a steel and steam engine manufacturer, a weapons designer, and the head of an international gang of criminals.

I was happy to see the return of both Ke-Ying and Oakley (although Annie isn’t given much to do this time around) as it looks like there will be plenty of trouble for all of Tesla’s associates to handle beginning next issue with the reprisal from the Black Coats. The issue also reprints the amusing “The Yonkers Devil” as a back-up story. Worth a look.

[Red 5, $2.75]

Luther - Series Three, Episode Three

Luther (Idris Elba) and  Ripley (Warren Brown) search for a vigilante (Elliot Cowan) still mourning his dead wife and using social media to get the public on his side as he hunts down and murders recently released convicts (rapists, gangbangers, and pedophiles) in the name of justice. Meanwhile, Gray (Nikki Amuka-Bird) and Stark (David O’Hara) try a different tack to get under Luther’s skin by scaring Mary (Sienna Guillory) and convincing Luther’s new girlfriend that the man she’s been seeing is responsible for his ex-wife‘s (Indira Varma) death. Before the end of the episode both storylines will converge in tragedy as Gray and Stark will be given all the ammunition they need to properly charge Luther and the detective will loose yet another person close to him to violence.
