Pitch Black Deja Vu is Riddick-ulously Familiar

RiddickHow much do you love Pitch Black? For those passionate few whose fandom is strong enough to warrant sitting through a nearly identical (but inferior) film with all the originality of say Teen Wolf Too, Riddick may offer some late summer mindless entertainment. Everyone else may want to wait for home video for this IMAX version of a straight-to-DVD sequel that may not skimp on effects but could have used at least one new idea. Well, at least this one’s got Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff) in it.

Although it hasn’t as aged as well as I would like I will still admit to having some affection for Pitch Black, the 2000 sci-fi adventure about a murderous thief trapped on a world of monsters with people who want him dead, but I draw the line at the ridiculous trainwreck of a sequel that stalled this “franchise.” To call Chronicles of Riddick something akin to Underwold-level terrible is frankly being kind. That Riddick got made at all, even nine years later, and isn’t nausea-inducing is something of a minor miracle.

Rocket Raccoon: Tales from Half-World

Rocket Raccoon: Tales from Half-WorldRepackaging $3 worth of nearly 30 year-old comics for $8 takes some balls, but as the comic stars Rocket Raccoon and was drawn by Mike Magnola I’m willing to overlook the hefty price-tag for Rocket Raccoon: Tales from Half-World which collects all four of the original issues of the 1985 Rocket Racoon mini-series.

The series centers around Rocket Raccoon’s job as guardian of an insane asylum cut off from the rest of space where animals have been bred and genetically manipulated to take care of the large collection of cosmic whackjobs. Events from the series include Rocket and his first mate (a talking walrus appropriately named Wal Rus) taking on a Toy War, killer clowns, the theft of the the Halfworld Bible, and saving Rocket’s love Lylla from an evil villain.

The $8 cover price (each issue was originally 75¢) is pretty steep for this nostalgic look back at Rocket Raccoon’s early adventures but for both old and new fans of the character there’s definitely some wacky fun to be had. Worth a look.

[Marvel, $7.99]

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #25

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #25“City Fall” continues as the Foot Clan goes to war with the Savate and all sides deal with fallout of Leonardo joining the Foot as the Shredder‘s new second-in-command. For April and Casey that means getting a little closer, for Raphael it means hitting the streets (and anything else that gets in his way), for Karai it means growing dissatisfaction with her diminished new role, and for Splinter it means seeking the help of an untrustworthy enemy.

“City Fall” continues to deliver as we learn more about the limits of Kitsune‘s control of Leonardo’s mind (laying the groundwork to bring the Turtle back to the Light Side) as well as Karai’s contingency plan concerning a pair of classic TMNT characters finally making their first appearance in the comic.

With the promise of the addition of Rocksteady and Bebop, and more of Alopex and Karai, the full roster is filling out nicely. My only real complaint with the comic is the inconsistent art from artist Mateus Santolouco whose style is at time distracting. Worth a look.
