MacGyver - Deathlock television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the original improvisational MacGyver (Richard Dean Anderson) armed only with genius-level intellect, a Swiss Army knife, and whatever he can cobble together to solve the problems of the week. In most cases the original MacGyver did well with pulling off episodes on a limited budget, focusing on MacGyver saving the day with whatever he could get his hands on. “Deathlock” is one instance where the show could have used a bit more money to play with as MacGyver, Pete (Dana Elcar), a technician (Beulah Quo), and Karen Blake (Wendy Schaal) are all trapped within a mansion by an enemy agent wanting revenge on MacGyver.

Red Sonja Valentine’s Special

Red Sonja Valentine's Special comic reviewA witch’s separate encounters with both Red Sonja and Kulan Gath leads the misadventures of the 2021 Red Sonja Valentine’s Special. The first encounter, Sonja attempting to take the witch’s head ends up poorly for the She-Devil with a Sword as she leaves with a head (just the one that was connected to the witch’s body). It’s an interesting stand-off that allows Sonja to keep to the letter of her word.

Had Sonja killed the witch the rest of the adventure would have never taken place as she is later accosted by Kulan Gath who threatens to kill the witch until she tells him she can use magic to find his greatest enemy. What she doesn’t reveal is the method on how he will find her, as her love spell makes him fall hopelessly in love with Red Sonja to the complete surprise and dismay of the Hyrkanian warrior who spends the rest of the issue struggling to get away from the lovesick fool.

MacGyver - SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini television review

MacGyver introduces Robert Patrick as grizzled veteran spy, and mentor to Matty (Meredith Eaton), Ian Cain who Team MacGyver is sent in to rescue when the embassy goes dark. “SOS + Hazmat + Ultrasound + Frequency + Malihini” offers an interesting puzzle as MacGyver (Lucas Till) struggles to discover what made the entire embassy sick before uncovering a group using a sonic weapon to empty the embassy and steal Cold War tech in the building’s basement they hope to turn into a weapon of mass destruction. Patrick is well-cast here, in a role that he could do in his sleep, but he’s not the only guest-star of note.

Prodigal Son - Bad Manners television review

While Malcom (Tom Payne) and Jessica (Bellamy Young) both worry about Ainsley (Halston Sage), the murder of the week gives the daughter of the Surgeon (Michael Sheen) the inside track on a big story involving a killer targeting failed debutants from her old finishing school. “Bad Manners” is most notable for the creepy doll maker (Christopher Denham) and the manner in which the victims are displayed after death to hide perceived imperfections. The episode also ties back to JT‘s (Frank Harts) run in with a racist cop, which seems to conclude here (although it’s possible there could be lingering consequences down the line). The experience, in which Ainsley almost dies by taking a huge chance and walking into a murderer’s lair, gives Malcolm second thoughts on whether keeping the truth from his sister is the best thing for her. His parents, on the other hand, may have their own plans on how to best protect their daughter.

Throwback Thursday takes us back to the early 2000s and a man who knows everything… except his own name. The 2002 Pilot episode of John Doe (Dominic Purcell) introduced us to a character awaking on a deserted island off the coast of Seattle. Color blind, with an odd scar on his chest, and with no memory of his past, John Doe does seem to have a remarkable knowledge and understanding of everything else. With the help of a few bets at the horse track and some Wall Street trades, the protagonist puts together some quick cash but is no closer to an answer to who he is or what happened to him. Seeing a missing girl in color, John obsesses on her case bringing him into contact with Police Detective Frank Hayes (John Marshall Jones) and Lt. Jamie Avery (Jayne Brook), both of whom are initially skeptical about accepting his help. Identifying that the girl was taken by her father, who had faked his death, Doe is able to return her safely but never discovers why he saw her image in color.
