The Big Leap – Revenge Plot

Gabby’s (Simone Recasner) convoluted revenge plot to steal Brittney’s (Anna Grace Barlow) part and get her kicked off the show makes up the primary storyline of “The Revenge Plot.” It’s an awkward story that has moments. It leaves Gabby with the part she so desperately wanted but without her car, which she had to trade to save her plan, and with Brittney still a part of the show.  Tied to this is a thread of a high Monica (Mallory Jansen) searching for how to make “Swan Lake” work. The ridiculous dance-off provides the inspiration, but after the drug wears off will she be willing to follow it?

NCIS’ search for a social media influencer (Chloe Lanier), and wife of a Navy submarine officer (Titus Makin Jr.), who disappeared at a luau is complicated after they discover she’s a CIA asset whose cover has been blown. Even after Whistler (Tori Anderson) orders them to stand down, Tennant (Vanessa Lachey) continues the search which leads to her husband’s abduction by those wanting to trade their hostage for the spy. The episode confirms Tennant’s role as a former agent for the CIA and also gives her a house guest (Julie White), and former partner in her spy days, who pushes Tennant to continue the search.

Hellboy: The Silver Lantern Club #1

Set in 50s London, The Silver Lantern Club #1 introduces Hellboy to Trevor’s uncle Simon Bruttenholm who has stories aplenty to tell of his spooky former adventures with a secret British paranormal society known as the Silver Lantern Club. Most of the issue takes place in flashbacks of Simon recounting his tale how an early wireless transceiver which trapped a demonic creature recently exorcised by members of the club.

Even if the adventure itself doesn’t feature Hellboy, and we get the titular character only in the bookends to the flashback, there’s still some fun to be had (especially in the manner which the demon was defeated, which I won’t ruin here).  Since it appears Simon has more stories to tell, at least until the pub’s last call, this is just the start of the mini-series.

Foundation – Preparing to Live / The Mathematician’s Ghost

What’s most surprising about the second and third episodes of Foundation is how much time is spent on Trantor with the Emperor clones long after Hari Seldon (Jared Harris) and his team have left the planet. In “Preparing to Live” half the episode is devoted to the investigation into the destruction of the Starbridge and the brutal punishment of both Anacreon and Thespis when neither will confess to the crime. The remaining part of the episode offers a look-in at the Foundation team traveling slowly through space which confirms a relationship between Gaal Dornick (Lou Llobell) and Raych (Alfred Enoch), makes an odd supposition that psychohistory isn’t complete, and ends with a bizarre series of events that isn’t even referenced in the next episode which pushes forward 35 years to Terminus.

Transformers: King Grimlock #3

The fight for Menonia begins Grimlock leads the Anglorians against the Red Wizard who unleashes more Wood-Bots and also an army of zombies against them. With Grimlock on their side, the Red Wizard (who turns out to be a Quintesson) and his armies fall. The third issue of the five-issue mini-series offers plenty of action while also leading Grimlock to an important revelation that he cannot ignore the Golden One, and agrees to help the locals against yet another adversary who grows strong on the planet’s source of Energon.

The issue also picks up on the thread of Arko who left Grimlock and has apparently signed up to work with the Golden One (wasn’t that who she wanted Grimlock’s help to take down?). Aside from making little sense, I’m not sure how this will play out over the two remaining issues which seem to set up a confrontation against the Dinobot and a very squishy human who, while brave, isn’t likely much of a threat.
