Remington Steele - In the Steele of the Night television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the 80s detective show Remington Steele. After the host (Jeff Pomerantz) is murdered at a detective’s reunion, the guests, each with their own history and motive, agree to let Steele (Pierce Brosnan) solve the case. Suspects include a former detective (Philip Charles MacKenzie) ruined by the victim, the victim’s mistress (Carlene Watkins) whose affair the victim revealed to her husband, and the former employee (Arthur Rosenberg) who the victim took advantage of and never rewarded. In terms of motive, the only real weakness is the episode never suggests one for either Laura (Stephanie Zimbalist) or Murphy (James Read).

Angel #2

Angel #2 comic reviewThere are several points of interest in the second issue of Angel, even if the full story remains hidden and a bit fractured and still out of focus.

Following the death of his friend, Angel is back in hero mode searching for answers. It’s a good thing too since Angel #2 introduces one of my favorite characters from the Buffyverse as Winifred Burkle isn’t found in Pylea but a psychiatric ward in Sunnydale. The much earlier introduction of Fred is an intriguing change which will be interesting to see play out.

Spider-Man: Far From Home movie review

Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, a movie you will definitely want to see before sitting down for this one, Spider-Man: Far From Home centers around Peter Parker (Tom Holland) struggling to fill the void left by Earth’s mightiest heroes while also trying to enjoy his high school class trip to Europe.

There’s quite a bit screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers (both who also helped write Spider-Man: Homecoming) get right. One of the oldest Spidey tropes is Peter Parker being crushed by the responsibility thrust upon him at such a young age. The loss of Iron Man, and expectations for him to grow into “the next Iron Man,” are overwhelming for the teenage super-hero just wanting to protect the neighborhood and find time to admit his feelings to the girl he likes (Zendaya).

The script offers a new threat in elemental monsters from a parallel Earth and Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), a hero who has tracked them here. When Peter’s summer trip is hijacked by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) he has no choice but to help Mysterio fight the threat as he struggles with his destiny.

Danger Man - The Brothers television review

Our Throwback Thursday post takes us back into the Cold War spycraft of Danger Man. When an important diplomatic package is part of a downed plane’s cargo stolen by bandits, John Drake (Patrick McGoohan) heads to the coast of Sicily to find those responsible and retrieve the intelligence. Unable to directly contact the Morelli brothers (Ronald Fraser and Derren Nesbitt), Drake’s plan is to earn the confidence of a confederate by posing as a rich businessman in need of the documents for an impending deal. Helping the woman (Lisa Gastoni) escape from prison goes a long way to help sell Drake’s cover and earn enough trust for an introduction.

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: The Beast of Vargu

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: The Beast of Vargu comic reviewThe latest one-shot takes Hellboy to 1962 Romania where a series of sightings over the years, along with some recent disappearances, seem to point to some truth behind the legends of a monster tied to the Castle Vargu in the Carpathian Mountains. Any doubts Hellboy had to the legends are soon put to rest by the thorough butt-kicking he receives at the hands of the creature who is in fact devil-worshiper Costache Szilagy who returns from the pit every few years to murder and send more souls to Hell.
