Hawaii Five-0 - He Moho Hou

While Kono (Grace Park) reconnects with a former surf competitor facing hard times and Alicia (Claire Forlani) is paid a visit by Five-0’s chess-obsessed serial killer, McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) and his team search for a drug dealer who parachuted from a plane killing both a DEA agent (who wasn’t lucky enough to have a parachute) and the witness whose house they landed in. The drug-dealing storyline will provide most of the episode’s action, including Kono highlighted in the most kick-ass sequence of the young season, but the heart of the episode comes from Kono’s subplot reconnecting with an old rival and coming to understand what she can do, and what she can’t, to help the veteran.

Everafter #2

Everafter #2The new Fables series continues as as Peter Piper and an injured Bo Peep return home without their prize, the out-of-control young girl who is bending reality in strange and macabre ways, and the body of one of their own. Given the situation, Connor Wolf is pressed into service earlier than intended. However, if the comic’s last panel is any indication, his career as a Shadow Player may be short-lived indeed.

Everafter #2 allows the opportunity for the brass to explain to Connor (and the audience) the team’s mission to capture thieves stealing powerful Native American artifacts from museums all over the world for purposes yet unknown. Dispatched to stop the latest robbery, Connor and Peter don’t get off to the greatest start as the young cub’s enthusiasm and eagerness aren’t appreciated by his partner.

Star Wars Rebels - The Antilles Extraction

Another classic Star Wars character makes their first appearance in Star Wars Rebels in “The Antilles Extraction.” After an Imperial ambush leaves the Rebellion shorthanded in both ships and pilots, Sabine (Tiya Sircar) goes undercover at the Imperial Academy as word has reached the Rebellion that a handful of young pilots are looking to leave the Empire. Befriending Hobbie (Trevor Devall), Rake (Corey Burton), and Wedge Antilles (Nathan Kress), Sabine attempts to get all three pilots to the Rebellion. Sadly, her plan runs into a snag thanks to the timely arrival of Arihnda Pryce (Mary Elizabeth McGlynn) and Agent Kallus (David Oyelowo) who have arrived to ferret out the very traitors Sabine is intent on rescuing. And, as Sabine notes, Pryce proves to be a much more cunning adversary than Kallus ever was.

Arrow - Legacy

After last year’s foray into magic and mysticism, Arrow returns to its roots for the Fifth Season opener. With all of his allies either dead or retired, Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) is burning the candle at both ends working days as the new mayor of Star City and nights as the Green Arrow. While the recent seasons have created more and more powerful adversaries for Green Arrow to fight, necessitating building a bigger and better team, the season premiere gets back to basics with a street-level villain in Tobias Church (Chad L. Coleman) who kidnaps the mayor in hopes of bringing the Emerald Archer to his rescue. If he only knew.

Death of Hawkman #1

Death of Hawkman #1For the first issue of a new mini-series entitled Death of Hawkman there’s not much Hawkman. Aside from the first few panels featuring Hawkman and Adam Strange post-battle nearly the entire comic shifts to Earth days prior and Adam Strange being trapped and unable to reach Rann when it comes under attack from Thanagar.

Although there’s far less Hawkman than advertised (and I’m not even sure which version of the hero we’re getting her following DC’s Rebirth reboot), Death of Hawkman #1 is actually quite a bit of fun. While I’ve never been that big a fan of Adam Strange, writer Marc Andreyko presents a story of the scientist turned hero that is a pleasant surprise.
