Batman/Catwoman #1 comic reviewWriter Tom King and artist Clay Mann continue their idea of a Batman and Catwoman couple that dissolved at the end of their run but is now back in force in the first issue of this twelve-issue maxi-series as part of the Black Label imprint. Told across three timelines, we see Batman and Selina working together, an earlier timeline with Catwoman still working as a thief but having begun a romantic tryst with the Dark Knight Detective, and a later timeline with Selina as Bruce Wayne’s widow.

The person apparently tying all three stories together is Andrea Beaumont who returns to Gotham in search of her missing teenage son in the present timeline. The Joker, who makes an appearance in two of the three stories, will also play a prominent role. While I’m curious to see how King wanted to end his Batman run, I’m not sure that I’m prepared to stick around for a dozen issues to find out (especially with a large chunk of the story set in a future that, so far, is of no real interest).

Today’s Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the dystopian future of Gotham City. Gotham City District Attorney Sam Young (Paul Winfield) becomes the target of Curaré (Melissa Disney), the most lethal member of the Society of Assassins who has never failed to eliminate a target. Helping Sam’s chances at survival is the fact the his wife is Commissioner Barbara Gordon (Stockard Channing) who go to great lenghths to keep him alive and will reveal her relationship with the Bat-Family to Terry (Will Friedle) while warning Batman to stay away from police business.

Batman: The Adventures Continue #13 comic reviewJason Todd is done watching. First, he’s abducted Tim Drake from the Batcave and hidden him away in a death trap. He’s also had altercations with both Alfred and Leslie Tompkins before turning his attention on the Joker who he manages to ambush at the Penguin‘s club. Nearly all the pieces are in place for the Red Hood’s end game.

Other than a few too many panels being wasted with the Joker and the Penguin’s henchmen going at it, things keep moving here as Jason Todd is able to get his hands on Batman as well.

Detective Comics #1027 comic reviewLike many of DC Comics’ recent anniversary issues, Detective Comics #1027 (which marks 1,000 issues since the first appearance of the Batman in Detective Comics #27) offers a collection of stories and art featuring one of the comic industry’s most beloved characters.

Even if it lacks a single great stand-out story, the collection is solid. The best of the tales collected here, “The Master Class,” features all of the best-known Batman sidekicks winding up investigating the same body left on a Gotham City rooftop.

“Blowback” centers around Batman’s ability to escape a death trap (while also thinking back on the many he has survived over the years). “Many Happy Returns” showcases the Joker‘s odd behavior of sending Batman strange birthday every month for years. “Rookie” offers the struggles of a newbie cop in the most corrupt police force in the world. Batman and Robin team-up with Deadman in “Ghost Story.” A business rival attempts to frighten Bruce Wayne in “Fore.” “Odyssey” offers a decades-long mystery in which the search for the ship of art belonging to Batman’s grandfather continues.

Batman & the Outsiders #16

Batman & the Outsiders #16 comic reviewThe story 16 issues in the making finally arrives as the Outsiders face Ra’s al Ghul who plans to unleash his new weapon on the world. In “The Demon’s Fire, Finale,” Batman leads the Outsiders into battle but it’s two of the team’s members who steal the show. First, Orphan mops the floor with the League of Assassins and Black Lightning flexes his enhanced powers against the Demon’s Head who offers Jefferson the opportunity to be a hero to a greater world.

I don’t know that any payoff would be worth such a wait, but Batman & the Outsiders #16 does deliver the conflict teased since the launch of the series. The real question, now that Ra’s has been beaten (for now), is what happens to the Outsiders?
