Batman: Black and White #2 comic reviewThe second issue of Batman: Black and White #2 gives us five more stories of Batman. The best of the list comes from Sophie Campbell. “All Cats are Prey” is a silent story featuring Batman chasing Catwoman, once in a black costume and later once in a white costume which allows her to hide from him in the snow (an idea which she steals from seeing an all-white cat hide from her).

“The Devil is in the Detail” offers an adventure from Batman’s early career, in the style of an old newspaper cartoon, as the Dark Knight Detective searches for a killer decapitating victims in a devil’s ritual which leads back to seven members of the GCPD and Gordon’s boss. In “The Unjust Judge” Batman is unable to save a priest from a collapsed church but stays with the priest until the end.

Batman Beyond #50

Batman Beyond #50 comic reviewThe latest volume of Batman Beyond concludes with Batman framed for multiple attacks around Gotham City by Inque, one of which puts Bruce Wayne and Terry’s younger brother in the hospital. Wonder Woman arrives to help solve the mystery, and clear Batman’s name (thankfully we’re saved from a lengthy heroic misunderstanding as Diana sizes up Terry in short order).

Inque was one of the stand-out villains from Batman Beyond and although her motivations seem a bit muddled (blaming Bruce Wayne for preventing the villain a chance to cure her condition) she’s put to good use against the formidable duo of Batman and Wonder Woman.

Batman: Black and White #1

Batman: Black and White #1 comic reviewBatman: Black and White returns for another series of stories featuring the Dark Knight Detective in black-and-white adventures. The standout to Batman: Black and White #1 is the final tale of the issue by G. Willow Wilson and Greg Smallwood which involves Batman tracking down Killer Croc to a woman’s apartment. Along with a nice twist, “Metamorphosis” offers the best art of of the collection as Smallwood makes use of the shadows and the Gotham night to frame our leading man to maximum effect.

Although there isn’t a must-read tale in the issue, “Metamorphosis” is worth giving the issue a chance, even if the rest of the stories don’t quite measure up.

Batman/Catwoman #1

Batman/Catwoman #1 comic reviewWriter Tom King and artist Clay Mann continue their idea of a Batman and Catwoman couple that dissolved at the end of their run but is now back in force in the first issue of this twelve-issue maxi-series as part of the Black Label imprint. Told across three timelines, we see Batman and Selina working together, an earlier timeline with Catwoman still working as a thief but having begun a romantic tryst with the Dark Knight Detective, and a later timeline with Selina as Bruce Wayne’s widow.

The person apparently tying all three stories together is Andrea Beaumont who returns to Gotham in search of her missing teenage son in the present timeline. The Joker, who makes an appearance in two of the three stories, will also play a prominent role. While I’m curious to see how King wanted to end his Batman run, I’m not sure that I’m prepared to stick around for a dozen issues to find out (especially with a large chunk of the story set in a future that, so far, is of no real interest).
