Batman

Detective Comics #32

Detective Comics #32The Icarus storyline continues as both Batman and Harvey Bullock continue to investigate the return of a dangerous street drug to Gotham the GCPD successfully stamped out years ago. Co-writers Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato keep Batman up late enough for an early dawn conversation as the Caped Crusader attempts to comfort the daughter of the woman who overdosed from the drug on Bruce Wayne’s front lawn.

The first-half of the issue deals primarily with both Batman and Bullock’s investigation, but the second-half of Detective Comics #32 amps up the action as the Batman infiltrates the Squid‘s lair and finds himself in a fight for his life against the would-be kingpin’s pet as well as in the middle of a stand-off between the Squid’s men and the Kings of the Sun.

Although neither the Squid nor the biker gang pose much of a threat, the mystery of Icarus continues to allude both Batman and Bullock as the new creative team provides another beautifully-illustrated issue of a Batman comic I’m really enjoying. Worth a look.

Smallville Season Eleven: Lantern #3

Smallville Season Eleven: Lantern #3With the Earth being bombarded with yellow rings seeking out those able to harness great fear Batman and Superman have their hands full. Despite his recent injuries, Green Arrow jumps back into the fray this time in a suit of armor. And, in bad news for the heroes, in space another Lantern falls to Parallax.

Setting up next month’s conclusion to the four-issue mini-series, Smallville Season Eleven: Lantern #3 leaves things looking rather bleak for our heroes with John Stewart now leading Parallax’s warriors into battle. It will be interesting to see how Clark and the group manage to turn the tide, but I’m actually more interested in the fallout with several questions to be answered.

Who will wear the Green Lantern ring of New Krypton? If Parallax is defeated and the Guardians are freed does that mean other possible victims (such as Hal Jordan?) may make an appearance as well. And what might happen if Lex Luthor gets his hands on one of those yellow power rings? Worth a look.

Batman ’66 Meets The Green Hornet #1

Batman '66 Meets The Green Hornet #1Set in the Batman ’66 continuity, the new six-issue mini-series (12-issue digital series) offers a crossover between Batman and Robin and the Green Hornet and Kato from writers Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman and artist Ty Templeton. Offering Dick time off to keep a date with a cute girl, Bruce Wayne boards the Gotham Express to keep an eye on a priceless fossil collection from the Gotham Museum. Also on-board the train are Sentinel publisher Britt Reid and his manservant under the guise of covering the story.

Arguing over their cities’ most famous figures, both men disappear to change when the train comes under attack by General Gumm and his unstoppable glue solvent. Although Robin arrives in time for back-up, neither duo proves a match for the madman leaving all four costumed heroes glued to the top of the train in the cliffhanger ending.

“The Batman and the Penguin are going to be partners in plunder.”

Batman - Fine Feathered Finks / The Penguin's in a Jinx

Continuing to take a look back at Batman’s more memorable moments on the big and small screen, the second two-part episode arc of 1966 Batman TV-series starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin introduced the world to Burgess Meredith as the Penguin. Complete with cigarette, waddle, and a signature laugh (meant to hide the cough caused from Meredith smoking constantly while in character), Meredith is in fine form in only the first of several appearances over the show’s three series run and feature film.

“I am vengeance! I am the night! I am Batman!”

Batman: The Animated Series - Nothing to Fear

In honor of Batman‘s 75th Anniversary we turn out attention back to the Dark Knight’s more memorable moments on the big and small screen with another episode from Batman: The Animated Series. “Nothing to Fear” is a stand-out episode for several reasons. It’s the first episode to feature the Scarecrow (Henry Polic II), even offering a brief origin to Dr. Jonathan Crane’s journey from university professor to super-villain, posits a theory as to what might frighten the Dark Knight Detective, and it also gives us the most famous quote of the series as Batman (Kevin Conroy), while under the grip of the Scarecrow’s fear gas, exclaims “I am vengeance! I am the night! I am Batman!”
