Darkwing Duck

Darkwing Duck #8

Darkwing Duck #8 comic reviewIt’s not every comic that gives you a swarm of vampire potatoes. Seriously, when was the last time you saw the Justice League or Avengers take on such a threat? They probably couldn’t handle it. You know who can? Darkwing Duck!

Darkwing Duck #8 gives us St. Canard being overrun by evil sentient potatoes. All heroes are on hand to fight off the infestation including Gizmoduck, Femme Appeal, Neptunia, and Stegmutt, while Darkwing Duck, his trusty sidekick Launchpad McQuack, and Goasalyn get to the root of the situation.

Darkwing Duck #2

Darkwing Duck #2With Darkwing Duck trapped in the maximum security prison with all the super-villains he put away, Negaduck sits back and sends the villains after our hero one by one. Surviving battles with Liquidator, Muckduck, Ammonia Pine, the Beagle Boys, and Camille Chameleon, our hero is finally taken down by Suff-rage and the guards at her command.

Meanwhile around the prison both Gosalyn and Mortimer have their own adventures. The former eventually draws the attention of Negaduck (never a good sign) while the later seems to foreshadow the return of my favorite new character from the previous comic series: Cat-Tankerous! As for Negaduck, the villain’s attention is split between watching Darkwing and the other half of his undisclosed master plan.

Darkwing Duck #1

Darkwing Duck #1With the far-too-short BOOM! Studios run of Darkwing Duck cut short by the comics rights of the character heading to Disney the terror that flaps in the night has been in limbo… until now. Relaunching the title through Joe Books, Disney gives the character new life on the printed page with Darkwing Duck #1.

With James Silvani returning to do the artistic duties, ssue #1 begins with Darkwing Duck‘s capture of Megavolt. However, that victory is short-lived with the return of Negaduck who takes advantage of Megavolt’s addition to St. Canard’s new state-of-the-art prison (an unveiling which includes a school trip by Gosayln and her friends) to trap our intrepid hero in a building full of criminals he put away.

Darkwing Duck #18

darkwing-duck-18-coverIt all ends here. The final issue of Boom Studios Darkwing Duck wraps up the DuckTales crossover “Dangerous Currency” and says goodbye to these characters as all Disney properties head to Marvel Comics. Another one of my favorite comics has come to an end.

Picking up from the events in Ducktales #6 (read that review) Darkwing Duck and friends are astonished at the sudden appearance of both Negaduck and Morgana as the true source of the dark slime is revealed to be Negaduck himself!

Darkwing is faced with a terrible decision. To free Morgana from the pocket dimension in which she is trapped he must also free one of his deadliest foes. Of course for a hero like Darkwing there’s no choice at all.

With Negaduck brought back into our world the characters find themselves completely at his mercy. That is until Scrooge McDuck calls in his secret weapon – Donald Duck! That’s right, Donald Duck saves the day by inciting the populace of both towns to fight back against the slime.

DuckTales #6

ducktales-6-coverThe final issue of the series continues the DuckTales/Darkwing Duck crossover “Dangerous Currency.” Magica and the Phantom Blot have taken control of Duckberg and St. Canard mutating both cities with the magic and the blot’s dark matter. The first issue for our heroes to solve is to find a cure for those infected, including Honker and Hewey, Dewey, and Louie, who have become classic Disney monsters and are wreaking havoc throughout the city.

Scrooge takes a sample of the dark matter to Gyro Gearloose’s laboratory. Once a cure is found, the kids are saved, and Magica’s plan is uncovered with the help of Gizmoduck, Darkwing Duck and the team can set their attention on stopping the real villains of the piece including an old Darkwing foe who returns on the final page.

A fun issue from beginning to end. I especially liked the classic Disney villains from Sleeping Beauty and Fantasia used here. My only complaint is the story concludes in Darkwing Duck #18 and then we have to say goodbye to these characters. Worth a look.

[Boom, $3.99]
