The Mandalorian - The Passenger television review

Baby Yoda gets knocked around quite a bit in the second episode of The Mandalorian’s Second Season which opens with an attempt by raiders to get the child from the Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) on Tatooine. Later the little guy takes a bit of tumble when the Razor Crest is forced to crash land on Maldo Kreis when the ship is noticed and pursued by New Republic fighters as the Mandalorian attempts to transport his unnamed passenger across the system. Oh, then there’s the race from a swarm of deadly spider monsters.

While not as strong as the season premiere, and with the questionable running gag of the “cuteness” of Baby Yoda continuing to eat the passenger’s babies (who are all between her race and extinction), “The Passenger” does work as a horror episode (a genre not generally in Star Wars‘ wheelhouse) in its second-half as the travelers struggle to stay alive. The creatures are similar to the Krykna in Star Wars Rebels. The episode comes to a close with the Razor Crest back in the skies but definitely worse for wear from crashing into ice and having giant spiders jump on top of it. In terms of the New Republic, whose attack on the Razor Crest is a callback to the events in “The Prisoner,” the episode gives us a look at a pair of law-abiding but compassionate soldiers in the post-Empire galaxy.
