Human Target

The Human Target #1

As part of DC’s Black Label, the noir-ish The Human Target #1 opens with the death of Christopher Chance in an empty hotel room before jumping back a dozen days to Chance playing the role of Lex Luthor at a LexCorp press event where a terrorist will inevitably attempt to make an attempt on the life of his client.

The sequence, beautifully rendered by artist Greg Smallwood, works well as an introduction to Chance’s line of work by taking the place of his client and putting himself in danger. As the title suggests, Chance makes his life as a Human Target.

The sequence, narrated by Chance, also keys us into a few aspects of an older Chance, less carefree than his early days, and less discerning on his choice of clientele. And that may have just gotten him killed.

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the Second Season of Human Target. The case of protecting an amnesiac John Doe (Roger Bart) injured in a car explosion quickly becomes personal for Winston (Chi McBride) when he discovers the person who wants their client dead is the same dirty cop (Nick Chinlund) he spent half of his career failing to bring down. Human Target - The Return of Baptiste TV review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the Second Season of Human Target. “The Return of Baptiste” features the final appearance of a character who previously appeared in the two best episodes of the series. While not a bad episode, Human Target goes to the well once too often by bringing back Baptiste (Lennie James) who Christopher Chance (Mark Valley) temporarily liberates from a Russian prison in order to enlist the assassin’s help in the recovery of a journalist being held by a South American drug dealer (Jorge Montesi). There’s some fun back-and-forth between Chance and Baptiste, including the pair getting into a bar brawl, but given the events witnessed in “Christopher Chance” and “Baptiste” it strains the show’s credibility that Chance would even consider going to the man for help or that Baptiste would be open to offering it. The episode refuses to even mention or allude to Katherine Walters (Amy Acker) and how her death ended the pair’s professional relationship.

Human Target - The Wife's Tale TV review

Throwback Thursday takes us back to the Second Season of Human Target. In “The Wife’s Tale,” Christopher Chance‘s (Mark Valley) past comes back to haunt him. Opening with an assassination he commited seven years ago, the episode jumps to the present where he attempts to protect the wife (Molly Parker) of the man (Dino Antoniou) he murdered from a similar fate. The fact that both jobs came to Chance from the same unscrupulous broker (M.C. Gainey) with plans of his own, and that the wife discovers Chance’s involvement in the death of her husband, complicate the situation even further.

Human Target - Ilsa Pucci television review

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to Human Target, and the episode that changes everything. After spending an entire season building up to a First Season cliffhanger, Human Target makes a noticeable left-hand turn in the Second Season premiere. The show wraps up the most obvious lingering plot elements in the first six-minutes as Christopher Chance (Mark Valley) and Guerrero (Jackie Earle Haley) rescue Winston (Chi McBride) from the intermediary (Timothy Omundson) sent to recover the ledger. Notably absent, and never mentioned again, is Chance’s old boss (Armand Assante) who we last saw heading out with his former pupil to recover the book and Winston. The bank shoot-out ends with Chance’s retirement, leaving Wintson alive but alone when a new client comes calling. After six months of searching, the determined Ilsa Pucci (Indira Varma) finally tracks Chance down to a monastery in Nepal as she will become a new client and the first of two new female characters who will alter the show’s formula throughout it’s sophomore (and final) season.
