The Best and Worst of 2008 (so far)

2008 is half over; where did all that time go?  So far it’s been a bit of letdown after the great releases of 2007 (more on that here), but there are a few movies worth talking about.  There have been some good, and some downright tragic, films released so far this year.  We’ve had robots, pandas, a man of iron, adaptations, Mixed Martial Arts, Indy’s pedestrian return, Speed’s car wreck, and (of course) some insipid romcoms.  We’ll take a look at the first half of 2008, the good, the bad, the overrated, and a few surprises as well.  Join us, won’t you…

Appleseed

  • Title: Appleseed
  • IMDB: link

Deunan Knute, the main character of Appleseed, has had a less-than-normal life.  As a legendary female soldier, and survivor of the Third World War, you could say she is something close to badass.  She is the main reason that I enjoyed this anime, not for the twist, or the CG animation, but for the hardcore female badass.  Usually with anime there is the alpha male and the weakling little girl who screams, cries and flashes her panties.  Now, not all are like that, Noir is about two badass girls, Aeon Flux has another badass lady, but for some reason I could never get through Noir’s entire series box.  As for Aeon Flux, I just could not stand the dreadful artwork, sorry to say, but it sucks.

Sub-Par Superhero

  • Title: Hancock
  • IMDB: link

Look there, up in the sky!  It’s a Comedy!  It’s an Action Film!  Wait, nevermind, it’s just Hancock, the latest and one of the least successful in Will Smith‘s long line of sure-to-be blockbusters.  This time, it’s about a would-be super-hero plagued by a constant hangover and an absence of motivation.  It sounds like a promising Summer movie; but the end result is a failed attempt at redefining the Superhero movie.

John Hancock, an amnesiac that doesn’t age, has no idea where he’s from or how he got his powers of flight and strength; but he does know a good idea when he hears it.  So after he saves a Public Relations consultant (Jason Bateman)‘s life, he takes the family man’s Pro bono advice for an image make-over to gain the public’s adoration once again.
