Marvel's Agent Carter - The Lady in the Lake

One of my biggest complaints with the First Season of Agent Carter was the show spent so much time putting Peggy (Hayley Atwell) in her place as a woman in a man’s world that it often forgot to have any actual fun. This trend led to such an inconsistent freshman season that I thought long and hard whether or not it was even worth giving the show a second chance. Hayley Atwell, by far the show’s greatest strength, was enough to bring me back for the premiere where, for at least a single episode, the show lessons the sexist themes of the first season and allows the heroine to soar by transplanting Peggy to California to work under new West Coast Chief Daniel Sousa (Enver Gjokaj) to help investigate a bizarre murder involving a victim frozen in the middle of the lake in the middle of Los Angeles.

Marvel's Agent Carter - Valediction

Agent Carter‘s season finale showcases the strengths and weaknesses of the show’s First Season. Despite offering Peggy (Hayley Atwell) some actual field work and acknowledgement from her comrades in the SSR, the season ends with yet another reminder of the times and circumstances Peggy finds herself stuck in suggesting little will change should the show return for a Second Season. The final scene involving Peggy and Angie‘s (Lyndsy Fonseca) future living arrangements (the exact arrangements Peggy turned down in the Pilot) suggests we may see more of Fonseca should the show return but I’m not sure that’s enough to bring me back for another go around.

Marvel's Agent Carter - SNAFU

With next week being the season finale and last week seeing Peggy (Hayley Atwell) discovered and arrested by her own colleagues “SNAFU” is the episode everything has been leading up to… with, as we come to expect, mixed results. Peggy’s guilt or innocence is eventually sussed out through a convoluted hour where Dr. Ivchenko (Ralph Brown) lays his hands on the Stark invention Leviathan is so enamored with and the SSR team suffers another loss. Once again Peggy’s colleagues blindly stub their toes for most of the episode believing her to be a traitor in league with Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) which actually seems far more plausible than her list of actions over the course of the previous six episodes.

Marvel's Agent Carter - A Sin to Err

Three-fourths of the way through its up-and-down eight-episode run Agent Carter finally turns a corner by catching Peggy (Hayley Atwell) and the various agents of the SSR on events and plotlines the audience has been fully aware of for weeks. Last week’s episode returning the Howling Commandos from Captain America: The First Avenger shuck a bit of the rust off the show by giving Peggy an opportunity to prove herself in the field far from the oppressive confines of the SSR. It also introduced Dottie (Bridget Regan) as an agent of Leviathan which is further explored here.

Marvel's Agent Carter - The Blitzkrieg Button

Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper) returns from hiding to enlist Peggy Carter‘s (Hayley Atwell) help in stealing back one of his inventions recovered by the SSR which he informs Agent Carter has the ability to cause a city-wide blackout. Or at least that’s the excuse he gives to get his hands on the last remaining piece of the most profitable enterprise he ever had a hand in creating. Teased since the beginning of the series, Howard’s betrayal finally makes its appearance halfway through the eight episode series with a foreshadowed reveal that is the least shocking as possible to everyone except Peggy.
