Astro City #43

Astro City #43 comic reviewDuring this latest volume of Astro City we’ve seen the Broken Man pop-up from time to time with important messages directed to the reader. What we haven’t seen, until now, is someone interrupt and hijack one of the omnipotent figure’s tales. That’s what happens in Astro City #43 when his tale about the Gentleman, the Bouncing Beatnik, and Lord Saampa is interrupted by the Gentleman’s daughter Tillie (who has her own amazing story to tell).

Breaking the fourth wall completely and talking both to the Broken Man and to the audience, Tillie steers the story towards her father, the super-hero known as the Gentleman. In doing so we learn something very interesting about this young girl who doesn’t age and how her father burst on the scene as a hero of Astro City.

Astro City #41

Astro City #41 comic reviewAfter 22 years and issues spanning more than a dozen series, mini-series, and one-shots, Kurt Busiek and Brent Anderson deliver the 100th issue of Astro City with Astro City #41. Very much in the same vein of those stories that have come before, the over-sized issue is presented not from the perspective of a hero but an ordinary man whose life was touched by heroes. Beginning in the Great Depression, we’re told the story of the the Astro-Naut (a world-class inventor and hero responsible for giving the town its name) through the narration of a City Councilman who witnessed the ups and downs of the city and the hero over the years.

Astro City #38

Astro City #38A companion piece to Astro City #37, the latest issue of Astro City remains in the Roaring Twenties. The musical theme remains as well, but while several other heroes are mentioned, the comic’s central focus is on Jazzbaby. Listening to the music of the city, Jazzbaby is able to find, and anticipate, trouble.

The main threat in Astro City #38 comes in an underground speakeasy where a villain known as Destine plans on unlocking the power of the mystical Star of Lahkimpur and opening a door to the netherworld. In his way are the equally strange serpent cult, Jazzbaby, and a host of other heroes that arrive to join the fray including the Cloak of Night and the Five Enemies.

Astro City #36Concluding the two-part multi-generational tale of the three men who have been Jack-in-the-Box, Astro City #36 offers answers about what happened to the original hero as well as delivering two separate super-villain origin stories.
