Scooby-Doo! - A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts

Throwback Tuesday takes us back to Scooby Doo, Where Are You! for another mystery involving some meddling kids and their talking dog. Mystery, Inc. takes a trip to Franken Castle, stopping at a fortune teller (June Foray) on the way who advises them to turn back. Ignoring the warning, the gang travels to the castle where they encounter a trio of monsters including Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, and a Wolfman. Clues uncovered over the course of the episode eventually lead to treasure hidden in the castle (and motive for someone to scare off anyone else that comes looking).

Given the creatures on display, the episode has a strong Universal Monsters feel. We’re also told that Franken Castle was brought over brick by brick from Transylvania, a common trope of Dracula stories. Along with multiple monsters (a first for the series), the castle also boasts some interesting aspects including a laboratory, dungeon, torture chamber, a collection of monster snacks in the kitchen, secret passages, and a crypt (where the episode’s villain leaves the inevitable final clue to unraveling the mystery). In the end, both the fortune teller and the monsters are all revealed to be the work of actor “Big Bob” Oakley (John Stephenson) who becomes the first to utter the show’s famous phrase after being unmasked by those blasted kids and their dog.
