Vampironica #1

Vampironica #1 comic reviewHave you ever wanted Archie comics to be more like Buffy the Vampire Slayer? If so, I give your Vampironica #1. The new ongoing series centers around rich girl Veronica Lodge who gets bitten by a vampire and becomes a creature of the night. Despite her hunger for blood, it appears Veronica’s main purpose is to protect her friends from the vampire who turned her and the other vampires looking to feed in Riverdale.

Vampironica #1 is mostly set-up. It’s likely you either predisposed to buy into the premise of Archie Andrews‘ on-again off-again spoiled rich-bitch girlfriend as a kick-ass vampire or you are going to ignore the comic altogether. Issue #1 was, as expected, exactly as advertised. I’m sure we’ll get more of Veronica’s adjustment to her new normal, but here we get her rebirth as a daughter of the night and taking down a couple of vamps at a late-night party.

Danger Man - The Lovers television review

Our Throwback Tuesday post takes us back into the Cold War spycraft of Danger Man. While in London, John Drake (Patrick McGoohan) is surprised by the request of the Boravian Embassy where an enemy spy (Michael Ripper) greets him and asks for Drake’s help to protect the Boravian President (Ewen Solon) and his wife (Maxine Audley), who Drake previously worked against while working as a spy in Boravia. Through a contact (Martin Miller), Drake learns a bomb has been sold to those who wish the President and his wife harm. However, the man will only sell the information for a large fee. Unfortunately, a gunman prevents Drake from learning all the particulars of the planned bombing.

Supergirl #19

Supergirl #19 comic reviewSupergirl #19 works around some of the issues I’ve had with the series (the DEO being an ominous entity out to stop Supergirl, Catco being anti-Supergirl, and Kara stuck in high school) by centering the storyline not on Supergirl but by someone she saves. Framed through a Catco interview Lee Serano explains to Ben Rubel what Supergirl means to Lee beyond just saving the non-binary character’s life.

Despite all her powers, Supergirl’s greatest asset is her humanity. This is something The CW was quick to recognize and incorporate into their version of the character but various comics haven’t always fully embraced. It certainly does here as Kara connects and offers ongoing support in the form of friend or big sister.
