The murder of a journalist  becomes personal for the Jeffersonian team when Arastoo (Pej Vahdat) is accidentally infected with the mutated RNA virus that killed her while examining the remains. Sweets (John Francis Daley) talks with the victim’s fiance (Kenneth Mitchell), a travel blogger who was out of town and isn’t helpful in piecing together the victim’s whereabouts over the past three days to discover where she might have come in contact with the virus. Angela (Michaela Conlin) tackles the victim’s encrypted laptop to discover he latest story involved talking to a scientist (Laura Kai Chen) at a biohazard facility and an expose about the dangers of scientists mutating pandemic diseases such as SARS and Yellow Fever.

The Jeffersonian team is called in to investigate the murder of a television producer (Danielle Harris) found in the basement of an abandoned building with mushrooms growing out of her remains. The case leads Bones (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz) to the TV judge (Gina Hecht) of small claims court where the victim worked. Suspects include the victim’s replacement (Allison Scagliotti), the victim’s ex-boyfriend (Jason Gerhardt), her stalker (David Petruzzi), the judge whose on-air drinking problem may have come between her and the victim, and an angry contestant (Rose Colasanti) who blamed the victim for loosing her case on national television.

Working around a documentary crew focusing on Bones (Emily Deschanel) and the team’s work for the Jeffersonian, the team investigates the murder of an undercover cop whose body decomposed in two different micro-climates after being shot twice in the chest (where the team also finds a bag of diamonds the victim swallowed before his death). Unbeknownst to Bones, the Jeffersonian asks Edison (Eugene Byrd) to take part in the documentary, whose sole purpose is to raise money for the institute, in order to “temper Dr. Brennan’s unusual abrasive manner.”
