The Spirit

The Spirit #16

the-spirit-16-coverDC Comics may be going through a turbulent period right now but that’s not stopping them from continuing to put out some pretty good work. I’ve been a fan of this latest version of The Spirit by David Hine, but I’ve got to say this issue just blew me away. It’s one of the best comics I’ve read all year.

The first half of the issue is presented entirely from Commissioner Dolan‘s perspective as he prepares to arrest The Spirit for a grizzly series of mob killings all of which lead back to the hero. The second-half of the comic involves The Spirit relating his investigation to bring the real killer to justice. For a comic that’s almost all flashbacks it’s a mighty fine read.

I’m also thrilled with the art by Jean Paul Leon who manages to spice up the pages with great artwork including quite a few panels Will Eisner would be proud of by working the title of the comic, and hero, seamlessly into every single page. Must-read.

The Spirit #13

the-spirit-13-coverThe three-part storyline featuring “The Professor” (a villain who uses toys, robots, and automotons to kill – think the Toyman only creepier) concludes. Once again it’s Ellen Dolan who steps up to save the The Spirit by destroying a robot created in her likeness.

This issue has all kinds of creepy sexual undertones (as to how the Professor planned to use this copy of Ellen Dolan), but it’s also balanced with tension, mystery, and fun which makes sure it never becomes too unseemly.

Although the epilogue makes sure we’ll never see the character of the Professor again, which I’m a little sad about, it’s the right choice. Writer David Hine foreshadowed the tragic end of the character over the course of the last couple of issues and presents us with a moral to the story: Never scorn a woman, even a robotic one.

The Professor may have been defeated, but the man who hired him, New York gang boss Shonder Zeev, is still out there. We’ll have to see how this larger storyline plays out over the next few issues. Worth a look.

The Spirit #12

the-spirit-12-coverCrimelord Shonder Sheev has decided to move into Central City, but first he needs Commissioner Dolan and the Octopus taken out of the picture. He’s sent his best assassin, The Professor, to deal with Dolan through a small trinket he offers to the commissioner’s daughter, and a few thugs with a rocket launcher to take out the Octopus.

His plans are foiled when he fails to account for two things: 1) The Spirit, and 2) the chance that one of the deadliest assassins in the world would have a soft spot for a beautiful woman such as Ellen Dolan. It seems even a tinkerer madman has a heart.

Fans of old Silver Age Superman stories featuring the Toyman should feel right at home with this one as the weapon aimed at Dolan is a minature clockwork Spirit doll that comes dangerously close to fulfilling its task. A little odd? Sure, but a lot of fun, and its nice to see Ellen play the heroine for a change saving her father and the Spirit with one shot. Worth a look.

The Spirit #8

It begins when the Spirit catches sight of Ophelia Ottoman at the funeral of her husband, gangster Jimmy Bauhaus. Concern for the attractive widow, and a nagging suspicion that everything isn’t quite as it seems, lead the hero to shadow Ophelia and try to uncover the secret she’s hiding.

After she kills the son of one of the other crime families tensions immediately rise and our gallant hero steps in, only to discover that the death of the accused rapist and the apparent death of Jimmy might not be what they seem.

Aside from the cover (ugh, can we get rid of these “First Wave” bars at the top and bottom, please!), there’s much to enjoy here. David Hine has gotten better over the series and here seems to have gotten the tone and humor of the character just right, and the art by Moritat proves to be seductive, humorous (I love the Sprit’s smirk!), and a little bit naughty. The comic also includes another b&w Spirit adventure by Walt Simonson. Worth a look.
