Smallville – Craving

Smallville Saturday takes us back to the time Amy Adams came to Smallville. Guest-starring as an overweight teen obsessed with shedding pounds, Jodi Melville (Adams) gets her wish when her meteorite-infused vegetable shakes shed her body fat but also leave her with insatiable cravings. Making her a friend of Clark‘s (Tom Welling) offers early clues to what is going on, and the episode giving Jodi a crush on Pete (Sam Jones III) gives him something more to do in the episode as well.

Along with the regular meteor freak of the week madness eventually leading to Clark’s big super-hero save, the episode tackles body-hatred, body shaming, and dieting and eating disorders. Although the fat suit in the early scenes look a bit goofy, Adams proves to be the proper choice to tackle the myriad of Jodi’s issues which give the episode something meatier, so to speak, to bite into. I also enjoyed Malcolm Stewart as her loving and supportive father who just wanted his daughter to be happy and fumbles for a way to help. The end of the episode writes Jodi off after being taken to the hospital, but given the fact that (as far as we know at this moment) there are no meteor cures available there’s likely a pretty good reason why we never see her again at Smallville High School.

“Craving” is also notable for being Lana‘s (Kristin Kreuk) birthday. Given the chance to escort her to the party at the Luther Mansion, Clark ends up standing her up again in order to save Pete from Jodi. However, Clark does earn back some points with just the right present for the birthday girl. We also see the beginnings of Lex‘s (Michael Rosenbaum) interest in meteor rocks including his first look at the Wall of Weird and includes him hiring Dr. Steven Hamilton (Joe Morton) to learn more about them.
