Superman: The Animated Series - Solar Power television review

Today’s Throwback Thursday takes us back to the animated streets of Metropolis and a hero who can leap tall buildings in a single bound. “Solar Power” opens with a prison break as Edward Lytener (Robert Hays) escapes Stryker’s Prison with new tech and a new plan to take down Superman (Tim Daly). Now calling himself Luminus, Lytener uses satellites around Metropolis to filter the sun’s rays making the sun appear red. Part of the genius of the plan is that the villain instigates it during a period of stormy weather with dark gray skies leading to Superman unknowingly slowly weakening without the yellow sun’s rays to replenishing him. Once the clouds part, it becomes obvious what the villain has done.

Superman: The Animated Series - Double Dose television review

Today’s Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the animated streets of Metropolis and a hero who can leap buildings in a single bound. After escaping prison, and getting her butt handed to her by Superman (Tim Daly), Liveware (Lori Petty) goes in search of some back-up to take on the Man of Steel. For her back-up, Livewire chooses the powerful, but not altogether trustworthy, Parasite (Brion James). Superman is able to defeat the duo by using more brains than brawn both in insulating himself from the duo’s powers (although the full-body condom look isn’t one of our hero’s best) and later by leading Rudy into making a final mistake.

Superman: The Animated Series - Mxyzpixilated television review

Today’s Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the animated streets of Metropolis and a hero who can leap buildings in a single bound. “Mxyzpixilated” offers the first five trips to Metropolis of the Fifth-Dimensional Imp Mr. Mxyzptlk. The classic character has been annoying Superman for years in various forms since his first appearance in comics back in 1944. The casing of Gilbert Gottfried as the annoying creature who Superman (Tim Daly) can only get rid of by having Mr. Mxyzptlk say or spell his name backwards is perfect casting. The character’s first and fifth visits take up the bulk of the episode with shorter visits in-between as Superman thwarts him at every turn.

Superman: The Animated Series - The Main Man TV review

Today’s Throwback Tuesday takes us back to the animated streets of Metropolis and a hero who can leap buildings in a single bound. The two-part episode “The Main Man” introduces Lobo (Brad Garrett) to the DC Animated Universe. Hired by the Preserver (Sherman Howard) to deliver the last known Kryptonian for his collection, Lobo heads to Earth where he creates a large enough scene to draw the attention of Superman (Tim Daly). Brad Garrett is certainly having fun here providing the voice for the intergalactic bounty hunter originally created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen. “Part One” is the better of the two episodes, featuring Superman and Lobo going at in the streets of Metropolis and then later in space where Lobo gets the best of Superman and turns him over to the Preserver (only to find himself also caged as the last survivor of his own race).
