Elementary – The Invisible Hand

Another attempt on his father’s life confirms Sherlock Holmes‘ (Jonny Lee Miller) suspicions that the group responsible is the shadow organization once run by Jamie Moriarty (Natalie Dormer). Although Moriarty does not appear in the episode, in scouring through her possible former lieutenants Holmes and Watson come across mathematics professor Joshua Vikner (Tony Curran) who fits the more classic mold of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Moriarty. Without incriminating himself, the man admits to Holmes and Watson his connection to Moriarty and her former organization as the episode offers a pair of scenes for the detective and the villain to discuss the situation in which they find themselves.

Jane Got a Gun

Jane Got a GunWhen the past catches up with them, Jane Hammond (Natalie Portman) is forced to reach out to her former lover Dan Frost (Joel Edgerton) to save the lives of herself, her wounded husband (Noah Emmerich), and her young daughter from the wicked John Bishop (Ewan McGregor) and his band of outlaws.

Aside from casting a woman in the main role, Jane Got a Gun is a fairly conventional western. However, the choice to make Jane (rather than Dan) the central character in the story is an important one. Presented from her perspective, it’s Jane who slowly opens up about her road after separating with Dan during the Civil War (in which she believed he had died). The heartbreaking reveals mend the relationship between Jane and Dan just in time for one final fight against the men responsible for destroying their lives.

Propelled by character and the looming threat more than plot, Jane Got a Gun succeeds on the strength of its leads while McGregor and Boyd Holbrook provide the right notes as the movie’s black hats.

Daredevil #6

Daredevil #6For the first time since Matt Murdock reset reality to hide his dual identity, both the lawyer and Daredevil have run-ins with Elektra. Murdock’s evening with his ex in a dive bar goes far better than the vigilante’s as Elektra proceeds to hold nothing back while beating Daredevil bloody (unaware who is under the mask).

Daredevil #6 showcases the positives and negatives of allowing Marvel Comics to reset Matt Murdock’s past. On one hand the issue provides the kind of throwdown between Daredevil and Elektra we wouldn’t have gotten before such a change. On the other hand such a move messes the waters of Daredevil’s past with one of key characters in it (he’s not even sure just what version of events Elektra remembers of her time with what she now believes are two separate individuals).
