Daredevil: Woman Without Fear #3

Continuing the Devil’s Reign tie-in, Daredevil: Woman Without Fear #3 restarts Elektra‘s fight with Kraven. Actually, we get two different fights between the pair in the first-half of this issue. The first offers a public spectacle where Kraven gets the upper-hand and the second sees Elektra victorious as she stops attempting to be Daredevil and instead returns to her ninja assassin roots.

The action is fast and furious here, and when Kraven falls Aka appears with a threat from the Hand. However, helping explain the large amount of the Elektra/Daredevil flashbacks we’ve seen over three issues, the news of Matt Murdock‘s apparent death (off-panel) rocks Elektra’s world and sends the assassin exactly where the Hand has wanted her all this time – enraged and vengeful after Wilson Fisk.

Daredevil: Woman Without Fear #2

Continuing the tie-in to the larger Devil’s Reign arc, Elektra finds herself pitted against Kraven the Hunter. Hoping to use old secrets against her, Kraven is shocked to discover Elektra has revealed all to Daredevil. Although it never really ends, the actual fight takes less than half the issue with various flashbacks to Elektra’s past, revealing a painful truth to Matt Murdock, and Kraven finding a new type of leverage to force a rematch.

The next issue should offer more of the pair going at it while Elektra’s old mentor enjoys the show. And now Elektra has the Thunderbolts to worry about as well. The longer tale, should she survive, we see teased as the possibility of Elektra and Daredevil teaming up to take out out the Hand. To get there, however, first she must survive Kraven and Devil’s Reign.

Devil’s Reign #2

Devil’s Reign continues with the heroes on the run (and others already in prison), Spider-Man being lured into a trap at The Daily Bugle to get the crap kicked out of him by Taskmaster, and the Kingpin making threats against Elektra. While Dr. Octopus engineers a way for the Mayor of New York to make use of the Purple Man to win the election, the heroes throw a swerve and decide it’s Luke Cage (instead of Tony Stark) who should run against him for control of the city.

This is your typical middle issue to a series laying foundation for conflict around the corner, suggesting Otto has his own plans for the technology offered him by the Baxter Building, and giving one hero a brutal ass-kicking. While Spidey is out, I don’t see Beyond or other heroes leaving him out to dry (as his identity would likely compromise others). So, who might show up for a save?

Devil’s Reign #1

Wilson Fisk has declared war on super-heroes. The new mini-series cross-over event gives us a pissed off former Kingpin taking on Daredevil and anyone else he can inflict harm upon as a means of revenge against the guardian of Hell’s Kitchen who he knows, but can’t prove, has messed with his mind. Using super-villains as agents of the law, the Mayor of New York is targeting heroes including Daredevil, Moon Knight, Spider-Man, other Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, and others.

The idea of villains using politics to attack heroes isn’t a new one (most notably with DC’s Lex Luthor becoming President). By the end of the issue, Fisk has the heroes on the run as even to help pull New Yorkers out of burning buildings makes them a target for Fisk’s goon squad. The team’s solution… Tony Stark for Mayor? Um, okay?

Daredevil #6

Daredevil #6 comic reviewTwo things have been true for Matt Murdock for most of the character’s comic run. First, he is a lawyer (mostly defense attorney, though he has dabbled as a prosecutor). (He was also mayor and the head of the Hand… the less said about both the better). Second, he enjoys putting on red spandex and jumping off of rooftops. Neither of these things is true in the latest incarnation.

It has been eight weeks since Daredevil has been seen in New York. Murdock has moved on to a new job as a parole officer, using his enhanced senses to scare his clients onto the straight and narrow path. In the meantime, the Kingpin‘s unfocused rage continues to search for his target and the cop who has been hunting Daredevil for months finds himself under siege from the Kingpin’s goons.
