Super Dinosaur

Super Dinosaur #12

super-dinosaur-12-coverWith Dr. Dynamo near comatose having lost both his wife and son in a manner of minutes, and the rest of the adults struggling with what to do next, Super Dinosaur, Elliot, Erika and Erin agree to set out to bring Derek home as “Super Force Team Awesome” is born.

After waiting all his life to explore Inner-Earth Derek is a bit disappointed that he must do so as the prisoner of the Exile. But the more time he spends in the secret world deep within the Earth’s core the more fascinated he becomes with what he sees including a final secret the Exile reveals.

After months of discussions of Inner Earth I was happy to see the place through Derek’s eyes. I’m pretty sure the team of Super Dinosaur and three untested kids as a rescue force is a really bad idea, but I’ll tip my hat for the terrific name. We’ll have to wait at least one more month to see what secrets the hidden city the Exile reveals in the issue’s final page have to do with Derek, Super Dinosaur, and fate of humanity. Worth a look.

Super Dinosaur #11

super-dinosaur-11-coverAs the Exile takes control of Dyna Dome, Erin finds herself at the mercy of the Dino-Men who have knocked-out Super Dinosaur and turned their attention on the young girl who hitched a ride to the action, not realizing how dangerous things would get.

To the teenager’s surprise, she’s rescued by her parents who are operating a spare suit of SD’s armor while armoring the T-Rex with some new heavy artillery. Although the group is able to win the day, by the time they make it back to Dyna Dome they find Derek has been kidnapped by the Exile and Dr. Dynamo‘s successful rescue of his wife was anything but as the woman he though was Erica turns out to be a walking bomb that almost kills them all.

Another solid issue that ends with an intriguing cliffhanger, and an entire new world to explore, as Derek finds himself transported with the Exile to Inner-Earth. Worth a look.

Super Dinosaur #10

super-dinosaur-10-coverWith Derek busy trying to learn something from the mysterious Exile, Super Dinosaur returns to the volcano searching for signs of the Dino-Men, only to walkin into the middle of an ambush. To make matters worse he’s got Erin along with him who decided to tag along not grasping just how dangerous SD’s missions truly are.

Meanwhile Dr. Dyanmo turns Max Maximus back over to his people in order to be reunited with his wife Julianna, but that leaves the doctor and his newly rediscovered wife at the hands of his greatest enemy.

Things are even bleaker for SD, whose knockout leaves Erin completely unprotected, and Derek is shocked to learn just how powerful the Exile is as he takes control Earthcore Headquarters from his prison cell.

Robert Kirkman and Jason Howard deliver another fun issue which gives us some dinosaur-on-dinosaur action, multiple cliffhangers, and several possibilities for next month’s issue. Worth a look.

Super Dinosaur #9

super-dinosaur-9-coverAfter three months where storylines really seemed to stall writer Robert Kirkman and artist Jason Howard deliver an action-packed issue that finds Derek and Super Dinosaur teaming up with Squidious and General Casey to stop The Exile and his Dino-Men from forcing their way into Inner-Earth through an erupting volcano.

Super Dinosaur #9 also finally moves the storyline of Dr. Dynamo’s missing wife forward as not only does the doctor break Max Maximus out of prison for information about his wife but we are also given a glimpse of the woman held captive in suspended animation Maximus’ secret base.

Throw in Derek coming clean with Miss Finkle about performing his examination through a robot, plenty of action around an erupting volcano, and the first look at the face of the new enemy when The Exile is unmasked, and it looks like the series is back in full-gear and a whole lot of fun. Worth a look.

Super Dinosaur #8

super-dinosaur-8-coverAs Doctor Dynamo and his team learn the Exile has taken control of Squidious’ former soldiers and is working on gaining access to inner-Earth Derek must also deal with the gravest threat to his world – a homeschool evaluation.

Derek’s quandary over taking part in the mission and reporting to Miss Finkle for his grade school exemption is solved by doing both at the same time, with the help of an android duplicate. Of course when things get too crazy in the field and the android malfunctions Derek finds himself under fire from two sides.

Although the idea of Derek fighting off monsters underwater while controlling the android from thousands of miles away is an interesting (if highly implausable) one, the reveal doesn’t work as well as it should.

There’s plenty of actions, and a couple of fun moments, but I’m a little afraid Robert Kirkman and Jason Howard’s latest comic (much like Astounding Wolf-Man) may have peaked too soon. Here’s hoping next issue ramps up the zany fun. Worth a look.
