Super Dinosaur

Super Dinosaur #7

Super Dinosaur #7Issue #7 isn’t a bad issue, but it does feel like filler and the major storylines seem to be on hold for an episode focused on Super Dinosaur, Derek, and the rest of the team having the day off to recoup.

We get scene where Derek and SD discuss the difficulty in their new awesome training simulation, but almost none of the training makes the comic. Super Dinosaur is at its best when it throws caution to the wind and amps up the action. Here was a perfect chance to give us a little in an issue that was going to be more character-driven but it’s quickly glossed over.

As Derek and Erin spend some time racing Wheels and Pixie, and SD and Erica spend more time bonding over video games, the rest of the comic deals with the upheaval at Castle Maximus after the capture of Max Maximus and Squidious being thrown out by his minions. As to the mystery over Doctor Dynamo‘s missing wife we may, may finally get some movement on that story in the next issue. For fans.

Super Dinosaur #6

super-dinosaur-6-coverAfter a short break Super Dinosaur returns as Derek Dynamo and Super Dinosaur take on the evil Squidious who attempts to stop the pair from blowing up the underwater tunnels to Inner-Earth.

After a battle on both land and sea Derek and SD return home where Super Dinosaur begins to lament the amount of time Derek is spending with Erin (even going so far as to create the girl her own version of Wheels), but he may have found a new playmate for himself in Erin’s sister.

Although the battle with Squidious provided quite a few pages of fun, I did want a little more out of the exchange between Doctor Dynamo and Max Maximus which really only rehashes the cliffhanger introduced in the last issue concerning the fate of the Doctor’s wife (and Derek’s mother).

It’s a solid issue. Even if almost all of the crazy insanity takes place in the story’s first-half, the remaining pages deal with important relationships and subtle changes at the Dynamo Dome. Worth a look.

Super Dinosaur #5

super-dinosaur-5-coverIf you’re not reading this title then there’s something wrong with you. Just when you thought Super Dinosaur couldn’t get any crazier (it is about a kid and a Tyrannosaurus Rex with a robot exoskeleton fighting evil, after all) writer Robert Kirkman and and Jason Howard prove us wrong by upping the ante of wonderfully crazy awesome one more time.

This issue finds Derek and Super Dinosaur defending their home from evil super-genius Max Maximus and his latest creation: the Mega-Raptor! How do you fight the Mega-Raptor? I’m so glad you asked! You put Derek and Super Dinosaur into giant robots that merge to create an even more impressive super giant robot!

This insane battle wraps up the comic’s first story arc and even lays down a little foreshadowing for a possible rift between Derek and his dino-pal. And even in defeat Maximus still manages to get the upper hand by asking Dr. Dynamo about his missing wife. Great art and insane action makes this one an easy recommendation. Best of the week.

Super Dinosaur #4

super-dinosaur-4-coverAfter a few weeks of delay Robert Kirkman and Jason Howard’s Super Dinosaur finally returns to comic shops with issue #4 which finds Super Dinosaur and Derek Dynamo track down the secret base of evil genius Max Maximus.

However, the situation changes quickly changes with Maximus is able to track a beacon set by Erica (who wants to leave her isolated new home) right back to Dyna Dome where he unleashes his latest creation: Mega-Raptor.

Seriously, this comic not only has a dinsaur with a robotic exoskeleton fighting evil but it has a new baddie called “Mega-Rapotor.” I don’t really need to sell you on this, do I?

The issue ends with a tease that the crazy awesomeness of next issue will put this one to shame. And this one was pretty darn good. If you aren’t reading Super Dinosuar you need to be. Worth a look.

Super Dinosaur #1

super-dinosaur-1-coverOkay, it’s a comic book entitled Super Dinosaur about a super-smart kid and his best pal who just so happens to be a smallish nine-foot tall Tyrannosaurus Rex in robot armor who helps save the world. What’s not to like?

The comic centers around Derek Dynamo, the son of struggling uber inventor and discoverer of “Inner Earth’ (a hidden world in the center of the Earth where dinosaurs still exist) – Doctor Dynamo. Making modifications to his father’s work Derek and Super Dinosaur work together to to the legion of dinosaurs under the control of evil scientist Max Maximus from grabbing control of the powerful, and dangerous, DynOre.

Okay, so it’s not Shakespeare. What it is, however, is fun! This series regathers the team of writer Robert Kirkman and artist Jason Howard who gave us The Astounding Wolf-Man. This comic has much the same feel (including the possibility of the fun being weighed down at times by somewhat shaky storylines). If you liked Astounding Wolf-Man, which I did, then this one should be right up your alley.
