Fatale

Fatale #10

fatale-10-coverFatale‘s second arc comes to a close as Miles retrieves a sacred book from the the cult as Josephine’s home is invaded by Hansel and his inner circle who find a Josephine far more eager (and able) to fight than the last time they crossed paths.

The final issue works very well in tying up several loose ends, despite being more than a little melancholy as both Josephine’s recent former lovers meet tragic ends over the course of the comic. Miles dies in the cult’s invasion of Josephine’s home and Nicholas Lash begins a long prison stint for murder and, to his horror, discovers what happened to his uncle’s missing manuscript.

They comic ends the first ten issues of the series with a bang and leaves plenty of room for more stories and a new direction as Josephine’s admission to Miles about her effect on men seems to free her in a way that may not only be dangerous for Hanzel and his friends but whoever may cross her path next. Must-read.

Fatale #9

fatale-9-coverAfter Suzy is captured and comes to an unfortunate (but not completely unexpected) end, Josephine and Miles come up with a new plan to use the film stolen from the cult to draw them out into the open.

Miles struggles with how different his life has become since meeting Josephine and his inability to fear or grieve for Suzy in the right way. Hansel’s displeasure grows at the death of Suzy and the end to his link to Josephine and his revenge. As Hansel prostrates himself for forgiveness from his god, Josephine and Miles attend a swank Hollywood party where they put their plan into play.

I expected the cult would be making their move in this issue, but even if writer Ed Brubaker has drawn out events a little longer than originally planned (the twelve issue series could now number more than twenty when all is said and done), the continued look at these characters, particularly Miles who has begun to question what is happening to him, is well done. Worth a look.

Fatale #8

fatale-8-coverThe latest issue of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillip’s Fatale gives us an interlude, a calm before the storm, and we catch up with Nicolas Lash who continues to run for his life.

Lash’s recent run-ins with the cult, his growing paranoia, and another attack on his life shake free cobwebs in his brain and the man remembers the first time he ever met Josephine which was far, far earlier than Dominic’s funeral. And a night of failed passion leaves him close to answers but also with a bump on the head and missing Dominic Hank Raines‘ stolen manuscript.

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, Josephine begins a relationship with B-movie star Miles against her better judgement and waits for the other shoe to drop now the cult knows she’s alive and where to find her as Mr. Bishop prepares to take his revenge. If you aren’t reading noir horror tale, you should be. Worth a look.

Fatale #7

fatale-7-coverNicolas Lash and his ongoing obsession with Josephine is put on hold as the storyline involving the new characters introduced last month, the a B-movie star named Miles and the girl nearly sacrificed by the Method Church, continues as Josephine and Miles find themselves in a cemetery under a full moon just as everything goes to hell.

We get plenty of Josephine, including her suspicions and horror at learning the creatures she believed were dead are still around, hunting for Suzy and the film, and now that they know Josephine is in Los Angeles – her. However, Miles is the main focus of the issue. We witness his selfishness and greed in his attempt to sell the film to his ex-girlfriend’s creepy producer as well as his confusion over his sudden bravery and need to help and protect Josephine.

Although most of this issue is set-up, with the blind Hansel knowing that Josephine is in Los Angeles and Miles now bent to Josephine’s will things should get interesting very quickly beginning next month. Worth a look.

Fatale #6

fatale-6-coverThe new arc pics up several months following the events of Fatale #5. Nicolas Lash‘s obsession with Josephine has only grown stronger as he finds himself increasingly isolated from friends as he works on a biography of his uncle to search for any clues about Josephine’s past.

Lash is approached by a local private investigator about a safety deposit box in his uncle’s name raising his hopes only to find his life immediately in danger as he realizes he isn’t paranoid after all, the mysterious group that almost sacrificed him months ago is still after him.

The rest of the new arc concerns a new character, a B-movies star named Miles who did a single film with Josephine, and who coincidentally shows up on her doorstep with a mysterious film Josephine wants to know all about and a bleeding young girl after fleeing the party of a local cult. The new arc starts out with a bang. Worth a look.
