Super Dinosaur - Battle Shock television review

Earthcore’s plans on reopening the gate to Inner Earth doesn’t go as planned thanks to General Casey’s (Dean Redman) prankster son Elliot (Tevon Herbert) who sneaks aboard the Dynamo Dome to wreak havoc, not realizing that he’s putting everyone in serious danger. In the kind of coincidence you are likely to find in a 20-minute cartoon, Super Dinosaur’s (Mac Heywood) fear of spiders is introduced and then immediately expanded on when the creature from Inner Earth that sneaks inside the Dome turns out to be a giant spider. The episode does give both Erin (Shannon Chan-Kent) and Erica (Shannon Chan-Kent) larger roles as Erica helps the team keep safe from the security drones Elliot (AKA Battle Shock) unleashes on them, and Erin’s knowledge of spider’s helps get their unwanted guest home without resorting to violence against the scared creature. As for Inner Earth, thanks to Battle Shock’s pranks, any exploration will have to wait.

Super Dinosaur - Rise of the Shark Men TV review

“Rise of the Shark Men” centers around the growing pains of the Kingstons moving into the Dynamo Dome and an attack on an Earthcore station in the Arctic. We get even more petulant Derek (Valin Shinyei), although, to be fair, neither Erin (Shannon Chan-Kent) nor Erica (Shannon Chan-Kent) are considerate of how their actions affect the status quo their introduction has disrupted. The tension culminates in a tense dinner party with neither side looking to comprise (although the burping contest Derek starts to show off does end up paying dividends later on). The other storyline introduces Squidious (Brian Drummond) and his Shark Men who have mistaken the platform as another act of pollution by those who live on the land. Given the Kingston’s help with defeating the Shark Men, and the entire family making a more concerted effort to fit in to their new surroundings after dinner, here’s hoping we’ll be seeing less of Derek’s petulant side in the episodes to come.

Super Dinosaur - Under the Dome television review

The second episode of Super Dinosaur introduces us to the Kingston family. Bruce (Brian Dobson) and Sarah (Kathleen Barr) are assigned to the Dynamo Dome as technicians and support staff. Despite Derek’s (Valin Shinyei) reluctance to accept their help, both quickly prove their value. Their two daughters have mixed reactions to the move. Erin (Shannon Chan-Kent)) is curious and amazed by the new surroundings while the sullen Erica (Shannon Chan-Kent) is far less amused by the move.

Super Dinosaur - My Best Friend's a Dinosaur TV review

The first episode of the CGI-animated Super Dinosaur, adapted from the all-ages comic of the same name, introduces us to young genius Derek Dynamo (Valin Shinyei) and his best-friend SD (Deven Christian Mack) – a genetically-altered Tyrannosaurus rex with a robotic harness. The two live with Derek’s absentminded father (Alessandro Juliani) in the Dynamo Dome, working for Earthcore to prevent other walking, talking Dino-Men under the control of Max Maximus (Marco Soriano) from taking over the world. The show premiered on Amazon Prime to such little fanfare that I wasn’t made aware of its existence until two-years later happening upon it on a completely different platform.

Super Dinosaur #23

Super Dinosaur #23To call the release of Super Dinosaur inconsistent would be kind. The large irregular gaps between issues has made me wonder more than once whether or not the comic was silently killed by Image. Returning for a single issue to wrap-up the current story arc involving the attack on the Dyna Dome and the reunion of the Dynamo family, Super Dinosaur #23 offers plenty of action as well as sets up a new arc when the comic returns after (yet another) prolonged hiatus.

I do take some issue with Derek‘s reaction (or lack thereof) to the fact that his newly-returned mother poisoned his best friend along with the attacking dinosaurs without first attempting to warn Super Dinosaur to get clear. Despite SD’s deteriorating condition everything at the Dynamo Dome appears hunky dory, well at least until the return of the Exile and the invasion of humankind by the Reptiloids.

Given the responsibilities of Robert Kirkman and Jason Howard on other titles I don’t know when Super Dinosaur will return but I hope that when it does we won’t get the same multi-month gaps we’ve seen over the show’s recent publication. Worth a look.
